Good and cheap places for snorkeling

We went on our first abroad holiday with the kids last summer to Kos and it was blissful! It was meant to be a one off for my 40th but we had such an amazing time we want to go on another abroad holiday.

The thing the kids loved most was just snorkeling off the beach.

I was thinking about booking Egypt for next Easter as the snorkeling is meant to be good but having looked through some past threads this seems like a bad plan!!!!

Is there anywhere else cheap with good snorkeling off the beach that anyone csn recommend? 2a, 2c who will be 13 and 10.

Thanks!

Any of the Balearic Islands. And yes i'd avoid Egypt!

We stayed in Korcula, Croatia a few years ago, and did some snorkelling off the beach. There was a water taxi from the hotel jetty that stopped at a few small local islands, and the beach snorkelling there was great. We stayed at the Port 9 resort, and it was great. It’s been renamed since, I think.

I'll add Dubrovnik area, kolocep and lokrum. We love snorkeling on holiday and the Adriatic is brilliant. We always see plenty in Cala d'or.

Some of the best snorkelling we have ever done has been at Porth Ysgaden in Wales - beautiful kelp forest. You'll need a wetsuit though - it's bloody freezing!

Well I didn’t like Egypt generally but the snorkelling just off the hotel was superb. So I wouldn’t discount the idea entirely if you are ok with a hotel based holiday.

I've had a good experience at Egypt .. not sure why it was so bad? Sharm El-Sheikh good and cheap. Pretty decent diving spots.

cocksstrideintheevening · 10/04/2023 16:33

Balearics or turkey.

Hersetta427 · 10/04/2023 17:07

I wouldn't discount Egypt either. The med is still going to be pretty cool in april(as will the water be) whereas it's 28-32 degrees this week in sharm. Having been to sharm 3 times if I was looking for a cheap holiday with good snorkelling that would be my first port of call.

Amazing. Thank you so much.

We are happy to mainly stay in the hotel to be honest so I won't discount Egypt. My son gets anxiety so just the travel and then being in a hotel is another country is a huge ask for him let alone leaving the hotel a lot! It was a quick Google on past threads about attitudes of men and sickness that put me off.

I will definitely look into the other suggestions too. I was wondering about Croatia so that's definitely one to consider.

Corsica was great for snorkelling. We went there very cheaply, I think it was about £850 for 4 of us for the week for flights and accommodations (was a while ago though). It was a chalet on a campsite, but good fun. Only issues are no one speaks English and it’s expensive to eat out, but if your french is good enough to get by and you don’t mind self catering, it’s a lovely place.

corfu is also very reasonable and has some great snorkelling spots. paleokastritsa in the north is stunning and very good for snorkelling.

Sharm is fine if you are sticking to the hotel. Pick a decent one, don’t scrimp on anything less than 4 star. Even in the 5 star hotels the food can be sketchy so ensure you do your research. The snorkelling there is incredible.

Costa Teguise in Lanzarote. So many fish!

Yeah If snorkelling is the big draw then I definitely wouldn’t

I didn’t have any hassles from men inside the hotel at all. It was when I ventured outside it all went downhill.

I've not found Croatia good for snorkeling...those crystal clear waters are pretty barren IME but appreciate it has a huge coastline so perhaps it varies. Certainly we didn't see anything more than the odd sea cucumber off the coast near Zadar.

Egypt is really fantastic for snorkelling. I've been twice recently, including taking 2 teenage girls. We were in AI hotels as we were only there for the sea really. Absolutely no problems at all. My partner and I travelled outside the hotel several times for activities in Sharm and found most people friendly and helpful. I think it might well be different if you were travelling as a solo woman, but I'm not sure from your post if that's the case for you.

Jeddah - the red sea on the Saudi side is incredible.

MelchiorsMistress · 13/04/2023 18:24

If you want a nice hotel that you can spend the whole holiday in except for doing some snorkelling, the Red Sea resorts in Egypt are perfect for you.

We have just got back from Egypt. Snorkelled at jetty off hotel near Hurghada and it was great! We didn't leave the hotel much due to hassle potential, and children happy with a pool/hotel based holiday to chill out for a week. It was the first time there, and my worries were similar to yours but unfounded. None of us got sick, but would echo advice to book five star if you can.

Thanks that's so helpful.

And thanks for all the other comments. It's been so helpful to think it through.
