Rethymnon, Crete or Protoras, Cyprus? End of September…

Which do you prefer?

Are either of them better in terms of weather for end of September?

We like to have a nice beach (warm sea is a bonus), restaurants and a general buzz feel in the evening but not so bothered about bars/clubs.

Thanks in advance

You should have decent weather and warm sea in both in late September. I would pick Rethymnon personally. Crete is a lovely, friendly island, plenty to see but a very relaxed feel. Cyprus has the edge on weather if you were going edge of season (May or October) but as it’s Sept I’d pick Crete.

However Rethymnon is a harbour town rather than based on a beach so you would either need to stay in Rethymnon and travel to beaches or stay in a nearby beach town and visit Rethymnon.

I only have experience of Rethymnon and it's lovely, you can walk along the harbour and end up on the beach or stay slightly outside Rethymnon if the beaches are your priority. We stayed in Platanais which is only a few miles away, easy buses and taxis, some nice little restaurants and bars if you don't want to go into town.

Totally different places. Rethymnon has a lot of history and is quite a traditional town (or at least it was when I went 10 years ago!) Also lots of other lovely places to visit nearby, suggest Chania (has a lovely market on Saturdays) and Georgopolis.

I went to Protaras last year for my MILs birthday and it's very touristy (think McDonald's and lots of little amusement parks). Our 3 year old daughter loved it but it wasn't somewhere that I'd have chosen.

We are off to Georgopolis in July. I watched a little walk around video of it on You Tube and we were hooked. It's fairly easy to get to Rethymno and Chania from there. It's also near Lake Kournas which looks stunning. I'd definitely choose there over Cyprus. I'm hoping it's as lovely in real life as it looks on You Tube!

@Firstshoes

Aw you'll love it! Crete is my favourite place.

Definitely recommend a pedalo trip around Lake Kournas. I still remember seeing the sea snakes and turtles there when I was much younger!
