Cheap city break

I'm on a budget and actually can't really afford to go away but I'd like to take my ds on a city break for 3 nights. We went to Belfast and loved that. Any recommendations?

I would have a look on premier inn and Travelodge websites and play around with dates and different cities to find ones that come out at best rates (budget friendly) for hotels within city centres for your dates so can walk to everything once there etc.

That will rule out quite a few places immediately (eg bath and Cardiff tend to always be quite high rates) but also help to narrow it down to ones that could be options.

Eg we got good rate for the Travelodge in Edinburgh before, just off the main shopping street, it was great

Loads to do in Edinburgh and Liverpool is really good too - museums, ferry on the Mersey, Beatles tour.

User1435 · 08/04/2023 09:28

Edinburgh is super expensive! It'd be cheaper to fly to Alicante or Krakow. Both great cities and much cheaper than UK even including flights. If you want the UK, cheaper places in my experience are Glasgow, Cardiff, Newcastle. I'm sure you'll have fun anywhere though!

LIZS · 08/04/2023 09:38

Edinburgh is not especially cheap, although there are some budget options.

TizerorFizz · 08/04/2023 10:05

@Greenstar9 There really are cheaper options in Edinburgh. However when you travel matters! The good news @Greenstar9 is that the museums and galleries are free. So it’s swings and roundabouts. You can walk more or less everywhere too. Enough to see in 2 full days. There is a charge for Holyrood Palace but not extortionate.

Bristol is varied for a weekend. Bath too. Manchester? Not sure where you are starting from?

I was going to suggest Edinburgh. The national museum is amazing

Stravawindow · 09/04/2023 16:37

Edinburgh expensive?

museum - free
gardens - free
botanics - free
arthurs seat - feee
st Giles cathedral - free
national gallery - free
museum of childhood - free
royal mile - free
Carlton hill - free
Castle esplanade - feee
greyfriars - free

Quite a lot to do without spending huge amounts of money.

Just came back from Krakow. So cheap! 2 course dinner with beer and wine was £30 in total. Cheaper than a nandos for 2!

ChristineCricket · 09/04/2023 16:46

@Spinningplatesallday how much were flights and hotel though? Flights in particular seem to have gone up lots recently.

Schnooze · 09/04/2023 16:49

Porto is cheap to fly to.

MrsMariaReynolds · 09/04/2023 16:49

We've just returned from a few days in Liverpool ---it was amazing! Highly recommended.

I really fancy Porto. Will have a Google,

Spinningplatesallday · 09/04/2023 17:03

@ChristineCricket we paid just over £150 for flights and about £50 per night for the hotel. In total for 4 nights we spent about £400 each for everything which I don't think is too bad.

ChristineCricket · 09/04/2023 17:07

It’s not bad for a city break abroad but obviously more expensive than uk even with cheaper eating out.

Same here! Stayed in a yha and enjoyed free museums, wander round the town and the churches, trip out to the beach etc. Had a great time

Manchester has plenty to see too. We feel Liverpool is run down in places but the RC cathedral is fantastic. Ditto the docks.
