Stockholm or Oslo. Expensive as Copenhagen.
Lisbon is hot ish, but not unbearable.
Vienna is in the mid to late 20s in August.

Stay in the UK? I would suggest Edinburgh but August is a bad month unless you want to pay £££ to experience the festivals. York, Belfast, Glasgow, London, Liverpool......

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 07/04/2023 13:22

These days you really need to go north to avoid horrendous temperatures in August. I would second Oslo, which is pleasantly warm without being sweltering, small enough to walk around the centre, lots of culture, and has a free public swimming area in the renovated harbour. I imagine Helsinki would be similarly blessed.

I found Oslo pretty boring. Stockholm and Copenhagen are better. Especially Stockholm which would be in my top 3 European cities. Love it! 💜

Thankyou for your suggestions , we’ve just got back from Copenhagen which we thoroughly enjoyed . Stockholm sounds like an idea , we’ve got a teen , we got the train to Malmo while we was in Copenhagen but there was nothing there atall , the bridge across was impressive though

Gothenburg is great for a short City break - lots to explore and if you have time for an extra day or two the islands are fab (you can get the ferry on the same ticket as the trams/buses for v little money). There's a big funfair with a wooden rollercoaster and a beautiful old part of the city with loads of cafes and design-led shops. My favourite thing was the Upper House spa but I got a bit carried away there - might not be possible with teens!

Oh bum. I didn't read your last post!

Prague was fun in the summer, loads to do, we also spent some time in the beautiful mountain town of Cesky Krumlov, a bus journey from Prague.

We spent Easter hols in Amsterdam (& Berlin) with teens and they loved it and want to return. Plenty to do and we had 4 days cramming in a boat tour (Damn Boat Guys, excellent and recommend), a 3 hr bike tour (We Bike Amsterdam), Van Gogh Museum (need to book), lots of walking around, markets etc and loads of eating out(some fab and diverse places). DH and I have been before so we had done a lot of the tourist stuff, museums etc and we were lead by what they wanted to do, didn’t want to do Anne Franks house or Rijksmuseum, sadly the Palace was closed but we all had a great time. Not sure how hot it might be though in Aug.

Helsinki. It’s an elegant, cool city, easy to get aroundoin the trams, visit the Allas outdoor pools, nearby islands, a day trip to Tallin in Estonia, or to Porvoo for the wooden houses, perhaps. I love Helsinik.

I second Helsinki!

Thankyou all so much for your recommendations, it’s quite difficult to please teens 🙈

Helsinki is amazing, my teens loved it 😍

Popping by this thread again to tell you to avoid Prague! We’re here right now and just got royally ripped off at one of the food stalls in the square 😂

I went 10 years ago and had a great time, but it is now unbearably busy and the local businesses have become a lot more grabby with their ‘prices’.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 01/05/2023 14:38

Our teens really enjoyed Rotterdam - Amsterdam’s much cooler cousin with far fewer exploited sex workers at every turn 🤨. You can do fab self-guided street art tours, we went to several great restaurants/bars, was fab.

midsomermurderess · 01/05/2023 15:05

I recently got back from Rotterdam (and Antwerp) and agree that it’s a great destination. You are also pretty close to the seaside, some terrific sandy beaches, and to The Hague, Delft and Gouda are nearby for day trips. It’s a pretty funky city.
