Where could I go with young adult dc for three nights? Somewhere easyish to get to, pretty(not a city), with hiking trails and that won't be boiling hot?

Ireland, Scandinavia?
Been to the Lakes and parts of Scotland a lot but still open to it.

Looking for specific ideas.

So if you had to pick one place to stay in Northumberland as a base, where would it be?
Happy to splash out a bit on a swankier hotel especially if it has activities/spa.

I've heard very good things about the Linden Hall hotel, which is pretty much half-way between hills and coast depending on where you want to walk. And only 20 minutes from Cragside which (controversial) is the most impressive stately home in the North with miles of walking in the grounds.

In the UK I think the North East coast is great ( Whitley Bay etc) with lots of coastal walks and also Newcastle which is a great place to visit.
Going abroad, Southern Bavaria has lots of hiking and signposted walks and chairlifts etcwith cafes or ‘mountain huts ‘ en route , same in Austria around Innsbruck area. Not much to do in the evenings there though.

Southern Ireland or Northumberland are winning at the moment I think!

Can't go wrong with either one. Anecdote; only time I've been to Ireland, I was on a motorcycle trip with some friends. They insisted on stopping and putting on rainwear for every shower, then stopping and removing it afterwards. (I was just trusting in the waterproofing of my leathers!) It took us a very long time to get anywhere.

Trumporange · 07/04/2023 19:51

I can imagine @PhotoDad!

We are well used to inclement weather, as long as it doesn't rain constantly the whole time.

We are now wondering about the West Country (Dorset or Devon ideally) instead of flying to Ireland/Channel Islands.

Anyone got any recommendations for a chilled out luxury hotel with a few facilities (spa, outdoor pool) and walks nearby. Somewhere that won't be overly focused on babies and toddlers in June and has a more grown-up feel. Beautiful views are a must!

In Devon we went llama and alpaca walking across Dartmoor with these people, we also stayed in their cottage which has a hot tub. Would recommend that.

In Devon as well went over to Lundy and that is a great place to walk around, we went on a swim with seals trip but can get just walk on Lundy trips. Then we stayed at Watermouth Castle but that's apartments with private pool for 1 or 2 hours a day and there's gardens and a theme park on site, mini golf etc.

Isles of Scilly are lovely too but further.

This place was great for overnight stop on way down, own private pool with just us in. Not a hotel but they said was a pub walkable which did meals, we didn't try that. Excellent breakfast.

Thanks @Silkierabbit. That place isn't available for our dates.

I think I want somewhere like Bovey Castle but my limit is £300 a night not £600!

Yes I looked for spa hotels in South West for a UK special break and was shocked by the prices and ended up booking one which was much nicer in Azores for half the price which paid for flights out and car hire with difference.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/04/2023 22:37

Alps?

Trumporange · 11/04/2023 23:36

@Silkierabbit someone else suggested the Azores too. What was the name of the hotel please?

Wicklow in lreland which may have better weather as its on the east coast. We stayed in a small ( cheap) hotel called the Glenmalure Lodge and there are fabulous walks in the Wicklow mountains around there. Easy and more demanding ones. It may be booked out as l imagine it's popular for hikers.
You would need a car though but could drive over on the ferry and as we drive on the same side its pretty straightforward. As it's only a few days this is nice and close to ferry so no trekking across the country.

Wooler northumberland brilliant walking in the cheviots

I also recommend the Azores. One of the best places I’ve been. If you’re in London there are direct flights, I think from the rest of the UK you’d need to change.

Beautiful islands, loads of hiking, whale and dolphin watching, natural hot springs. They are fairly mild in the summer, due to their location.

Silkierabbit · 12/04/2023 10:32

Yes we flew to Azores from Stansted direct though when we went it was only on Mondays (Ryanair to Ponta Delgada) so as we were staying 3 nights we flew back again with Ryanair via Porto (can also do Lisbon) and we stayed in Porto overnight overlooking the river. I'm not sure if currently there are issues with strikes, lots of people seem to be on strike atm in Europe with cost of living crisis. Our flight back from Porto nearly got delayed 45 mins by French air traffic strike but then they let it through.
