Canaries - where would suit us?

We'd like somewhere near a beach, with a few shops (including supermarket)/restaurants, on a main bus route and within 60mins of airport. I guess a small/medium resort (although larger ok if not overly commercialised).
Don't mind a family resort, but we're a couple so nice to have the odd bar/restaurant adults can just chill at.

As regards days out, we're happy pottering around other resorts, maybe a boat trip. Maybe something historic or totally different one day, but flexible.

We've stayed at Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria before. Not against going back there, only thing that puts me off it's the maximum journey from airport (suffer from travel sickness).

Lanzarote, especially Puerto Del Carmen or Playa de Pocillos. We've had lovely holidays there and very close to airport.

HydrangeaHo · 04/04/2023 16:08

Playa Blanca Lanzarote. We were there in Feb and it ticks all those boxes.
Puerto Del Carmen also nice and has a bit more night life if that's your thing.

Just got back from Costa Tiguise in Lanzarote. It's only half an hour from airport and really easy to get to rest of island. We hired a car for 2 days, and did a great coach trip, but bus stops just outside hotel went to a few different places

bruffin · 04/04/2023 17:02

Costa Teguise not Tiguise

Puerto Calero Lanzarote and you can get a bus to the nearby beaches. It’s much nicer there than Puerto del Carmen. Or if you want more expensive then Hotel Botanico in Tenerife is great.

I second Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote. Lovely coastal walks in both directions. Easy buses to other resorts and the capital Arrecife. It’s a long resort and fairly commercialised but not rowdy. It’s a place that’s dominated by self catering so the restaurant trade thrives, some fantastic places to eat at far less cost than at home. 15 mins from airport

I’m in Lanzarote now, the Sandos Papagayo hotel in Playa Blanca.
It’s the most chilled out place, big hotel but lots of little hidden corners. Lots going on but you can just please yourself. It’s away from the main resort/marina but they have a free bus a couple of times a day, there is also a small shopping centre 5 mins walk away.

Half an hour in a taxi from the airport.

There is also an adults only pool and hot tub + indoor bar with music most nights, it’s where I’m currently sat drinking a mojito.
You can upgrade to royal elite, with a private restaurant and also an indoor/outdoor bar where you just help yourself to drinks and snacks plus an adults only lounge.

Thank you for your replies, and I'll certainly look at all the resorts suggested (interesting that every reply has come back saying a resort in Lanzarote and no other islands mentioned).

BorgQueen if we decide Playa Blanca is the resort for us, will definitely look at that hotel more, it does look nice.

We've also been to Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, so can't comment other about other islands. Wouldn't mind going back there. We stayed in Apartamentos Cordial Mogán Valle at the time. A bit further out but set into a hillside to fantastic views in higher up apartments. Decent balconies and a selection of pools, some busy, some quiet if you that's what you want. Although, it was further out, our six year old managed it fine and it was a nice walk in. I can remember driving somewhere through the south with sand dunes, which didn't have so much character.

If you're looking at other islands, I think Lanzarote has more golden/white sands if you prefer that, but you might like one of the others as it feels it's part of their character.

If beaches are your thing then Corralejo in Fuertaventura has a fabulous beach. It's a similar vibe to Playa Blanca. In fact you can see it from PB. Smallish resort with lots of restaurants and bars but not rowdy.

Costa Adeje in Tenerife might suit. Some great hotels there and close to airport. It's a bigger resort though.

gogohmm · 06/04/2023 15:04

We did ai in fuerterentura, Down in the south - the nice thing was there was 5 different restaurants on site, all included in the price (you booked on an app) so it wasn't a case of eating in a huge noisy buffet each night, 3 of the restaurants were adults only, there were 2 adults only pools and right on a gorgeous sandy beach. Just one thing of note for those who don't like that sort of things, about 10% on the beach were without clothes, mostly much older adults, young people definitely prefer swimwear! We certainly would go back if it was at a similar price to what we paid (a bargain last minute)

mrsorangepyjamas · 06/04/2023 15:10

Matagorda in Lanzarote. Has everything you want, we stayed in a chalet in Costa Sal.

AuntieDolly · 06/04/2023 15:20

I prefer Lanzarote to Fuertaventurea. We normally rent a place just outside costa teguise - longish walk into town along the prom, but right on the ocean. Great island to drive around.

allmycats · 06/04/2023 15:25

White Suites in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote is very nice and so is Princess Yaiza. Both nice and central but quiet inside

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/04/2023 15:46

Word of warning - Avoid all coal mines.
😁

purplecorkheart · 06/04/2023 15:59

Matagorda in Lanzarote is lovely.

Comii9 · 06/04/2023 16:08

Tenerife Costa Adeje Principe Bahia hotel

sunseeker19 · 10/04/2023 11:43

Playa Blanca in Lanzarote or Playa de Mogan in Gran Canaria - both picturesque resorts with lovely places to eat, drink, have a wander and watch the world go by. Beautiful beaches too. Two of my happy places!
