hi,
tomorrow were supposed to going to sherwood forest for the afternoon (as ds1 has a robin hood obssession after the bbc show) we are stopping off via a few days away in the peak district.

  • is it a nice walk around, do they have trails you can follow which lead through the forest?

  • do you have to pay to walk through? is it a national trust or something? is it open??

  • and i cant find the postcode on its website to give to the satnav for directions, anyone any idea?

thankyou

Do remember the latest Robin Hood series was filmed in Hungary, not Edwinstowe.

Edwinstowe has a great pie shop though.

You should have a good time at the park as it is half term here in Notts and there's always loads of activities on at visitor centre.

Steer clear of Mansfield at all costs though...

worley · 13/02/2008 21:20

why's that, we nearly booked a travelodge in masnfield, but they didnt have any of the dates at their reduced rate!! was it a lucky escape then..
i knew it wasnt filmed here, but will reinforce it as we travel tomorrow.

Mansfield is a shithole.

Stay in Nottingham, then you can go to the Tales of Robin Hood too!

gigglewitch · 13/02/2008 22:18

forest, major oak and visitor centre all good.
Clumber Park, also part of 'sherwood forest' is fantastic for loads of huge space to be free in!!

enjoy your day.

Daisymoo · 13/02/2008 22:20

There's also a Robin Hood exhibition at Nottingham Castle at the moment.

HonoriaGlossop · 13/02/2008 22:57

You'll have to look for the 'great oak' - it's HUGE and I can't remember the blurb but it's supposed to have links to Robin Hood, someone certainly could have lived inside it

I think your ds will love it

hellish · 14/02/2008 05:36

lovely walk with kids to see the major oak,
well worth a visit

chopster · 14/02/2008 08:37

I thought the major oak was a letdown really. It had tons of scaffolding supporting it, could barely see the tree!

PuppyMonkey · 14/02/2008 20:25

That's cos it is very old and falling down!

worley · 16/02/2008 17:42

thankyou all,
ds1 did love the forest and walking round the trail to see the major oak. ds2 managed to walk all the way too which wore him out for the rest of our jounery to the peak district, he slept the rest of the way!!
