San francisco/ Lake Tahoe / California in August

We haven’t been long haul since kids and weren’t considering it until today my cousin in San Francisco said we could stay whenever we want in their house in lake Tahoe!! So now looking into an August adventure with our early Teens to California. Might as well do a bit of a road trip with budget accommodation - maybe LA/San Diego, san fran, Lake Tahoe . Any suggestions of an itinerary? Thanks

Lake Tahoe is far closer to SF overall than LA or SD. I would leave those two cities for another visit.

How long will your holiday be?. If it is two weeks or thereabouts I would seriously consider flying into Reno-Tahoe airport from San Francisco rather than driving there.

Buy a good scale road map of CA and look at driving distances carefully. You really do not want to spend all your holiday time merely driving from place to place every couple of days because you could end up seeing more of the car than the country you have come to see.
