Europe holidays by train only!

Hi!

Looking for some advice by some fellow plane avoiders… I absolutely love travel but unfortunately my partner is terrified of flying. We’ve flown to Italy once, but he is pretty adamant that he does not want to fly again in the near future.

We have 2 DC aged 2.5 and 1. Next year, we would really love to take them abroad, however with the no plane rule implemented by DP, and our children being young, we’re limited with where we can go.

Any one else have experiences of travel from UK to Europe by train? I personally do not like Paris & do not feel like Amsterdam would be good for my children at this age (when I went it was a party holiday). Looked into Nice as a potential & Switzerland which is a quick train from Paris (but terribly expensive & out of our budget atm).

Please recommend European holidays suitable for children this young!

I am mourning the Brexit induced loss of the direct London to Marseille Eurostar. You can obviously still easily get to South East France by train but it was so much easier changing at Avignon or Marseille rather than Paris.

I hear you. We used to get the direct train to Avignon and spend a week in Provence. F*cking Brexshit.

San Sebastián by train is easily doable - TGV from Paris to Hedaye at the Spanish border and then a 30 minute local train to San Sebastián.

It's a great journey through France - very quick to Bordeaux and then a bit slower for the rest of the journey. It's about the same duration as the train from London to Edinburgh - but nearly twice the distance.

I haven't read the whole thread but have just done London to Nice with children (a bit older than yours) we changed in Paris and got the night train which was fine and an adventure but I might not have done with a toddler that needed specific naps/nappy changing as the night train is quite basic. Nice was lovely but expensive. And stoney beach so might be tempted to go someone else on that coast if we went again.

Night train to Perpignan from Paris was nice too! Some nice beaches along the coast from there by train.
