Family Safari East Africa

Hi, I want to visit Africa with my 12 year old. Is Kenya or Tanzania better for safari and why? How long to be on safari and what to combine it with? I know many people recommend Southern Africa but I'm quite drawn to the Eastern part as we are able to travel in early summer (end June/early July) and I think this will be a good time both for weather to see the migrating animals in the Serengeti for example.
Also, would it be better to go with a group on the safari or individually?
Any other hints and tips?
Thanks in advance.

We are off to a Tanzania with company called Wayo Africa

I wanted certain sites and the migration. We are going to Zanzibar afterwards

we are going on our own as a family

We had a wonderful safari in Kenya. We organised the holiday we wanted and then left Trailfinders to get it all organised for us. We loved the Masai Mara and we also traveled to Lake Nekuru. We also had a nice couple of days in Nairobi.

I love Kenya so much.

Most camps you will share a jeep with other visitors, unless you get lucky and bag one to yourself. I think some you can pay extra.

Presuming you are flying from London, I would recommend staying overnight in Nairobi before flying out the next morning to your camp. There's a small domestic airport for such flights. As well as the Masi Mara, I can highly recommend Old Pejeta for a different view of Kenya. We also stayed a few nights at Loldia House which was fab for birdwatching and smaller trips to see flamingoes etc.

If budget permits then a night a giraffe Manor is a must imo!

Happy to answer any questions I can.

We used Audley Travel.

We were originally thinking of going on Safari with DD(15) - Kenya - but have ended up cutting the budget significantly and spending a week in Mauritius. Be aware that there is/was a fairly severe drought in a lot of the country.

You don't say where you are flying from but we were finding that flights via Europe (in our case from Bristol via Schiphol with KLM) were a lot cheaper. I just thought I would mention it in case a Regional airport in UK would work for you.

Thank you, we have decided for Kenya in the end and yes we will be flying via a European city. I hear that rain has finally arrived in Kenya. Enjoy Mauritius!

I am wondering how your Safari was? I am looking to take 12 year old daughter to either Kenya or Tanzania. Would love to hear details! And any recommendations.
