York Railway Museum is FAB. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big train fan (!) but me and my 5 year old son loved it. You can get right up close to everything and there's tons of stuff to see. And best of all, it's free. And if you've got time, I would do the Wheel of York too which is right next door. There's also a little road train which leaves from just outside the museum and takes you up in the city centre. York is lovely and there are lots of lovely little shops down the lanes if you want to treat yourself while you're there!

Haven't been to the Thomas day but the Railway Museum is great - i have 3 boys and 1 girl and they all love it

we always go when we're up at my mum's because they always ask to go!!

There's a bit to do outside too - a park and little train ride

Have fun!

If your DS likes Thomas there's a Thomas Theme Park being built at Drayton Manor if you didn't know already

I have 2 boys and have visited this place reguklarly for 10 years

DO NOT GO ON A THOMAS DAY!!!!

They will bleed you dry and your little man will have to queue for hours and half the stuff they charge you for is available for free (or low cost) on a normal day.

Go on a normal day, take a picnic as cafe is very expensive and save your pennies to spend in the inevitable Thomas gift shop.

Thomas Days Out are much nicer, better value and less frantic on the North Yorks moors railway or better still, the Embsay Steam railway near Skipton.

We went a few years ago when DS1 was 4 and DS2 was 2. They loved it but it was very busy - long queues to do anything, particularly ride on "Thomas" (and the "Thomas" engine looked nothing like the "real" Thomas).

And although York Railway Museum is normally free, you pay through the nose for the special Thomas days.

Agree the Yorkshire Wheel is good though - we went on it last half-term.

Agree, railway museum is fab, partic for train enthusiasts, but avoid like the plague on thomas events.
wheel good if your lo not scared of heights, swinging carriages.

Sparkles - I read about the Thomas them park at Drayton Manor but cannot find out any information on the website about when it is due to open etc - do you know?

Tommy · 15/02/2008 16:44

would agree that Thomas days are a bit of a swizz. They are always packed and they fleece you for loads of Thomas merchandise that can buy in Woolworths and you have to queue for ages to get on anything

sparklesandwine · 15/02/2008 17:37

ceebee74 - i believe its march/april time but i'm not 100% on that, my brother lives near it and keeps giving me little updates from their local paper

I'll do a thread when i know when its opening for definate though

btw we've never bought anything from the shop there i always dress DS2 and DS3 in Thomas tops to go (so not tempted) and let them take a train each (so not tempted)

.....or am i just tight
