Me and DP are having a 3 day child free trip in Venice at the start of April. Looking for must do suggestions and out of the way places to eat please?

Whereabouts in Venice are you staying?

For things to do I would suggest pre-booking a tour of the Doge's Palace, pre-booking St Marks Basilica - because both of these generate enormous queues and your time is limited.

Then a lot depends what you want to do, you can go to the big hitting museums like the Accademia or go in and out of churches, my favourite is the Chiesa di San Zaccaria.

A day trip to Murano, Burano and Torcello is lovely. Have a nice lunch on Burano which is especially well served with restuarants, we liked Riva Rosa.

It's worth going to the Scuolas, my favourite is the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni with the fun Carpaccio pictures. There is also a major exhibition of Carpaccio on at the Doge's Palace.

I'd really recommend the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. I loved the sculptures more than the artwork, but all of it was great. It's very close to the Basilica Santa Maria. I love the Dorsodura district more than any other. Have a great time.

Venice is such a lovely city to wander around. It is easy to spend hours walking aimlessly, stopping for a coffee / gelato etc and seeing all the architectures and bridges.

Peggy Guggenheim and the Gallerie dell'Accademia are worth a visit, as well as the Doge's Palace, Basilica and Campanile in St Mark's Square.

You can take the vaporetto to Murano/Burano which have nice glass workshops and cafes.

There are lots of little squares, I remember one called Campo Santa Margarita away from the centre which had lovely fresh fruit stalls when we visited.

Bacareto de lele for 90 cent prosecco!

Torcello is wonderful.

Buy a Lonely Planet Guide. They do have the best recommendations! In addition to above. I would add:

no 1 Vaporetto stopping everywhere on the Grand Canal. A cheapish tour bus! Just marvel at the Grand Canal

Rialto bridge

Scuola Grande di San Rocco - Tintoretto at his best

C’a D’oro - check for closures. Take a traghetto to get there. Will you dare to stand?

Querini Stampalia for more art

Madonna Dell’Orto church

nyseo del Vetro, Murano (glass museum)

Not so easy to find: The external staircase at the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo - perfect building! Not so easy to find but it’s just wonderful Venice!

Have fun.

Nyseo? Museo!!

I never understand these posts. Why do people book holidays without first considering what they will do there, and whether it interests them? Baffling!

3 days isn't very long, so you won't have time to do all of:
St Mark's Square & Basilica
The Campanile
Doge's Palace
Accademia Gallery
Peggy Guggenheim Gallery
San Giorgio
Rialto Bridge
San Fenice Opera House
Arsenale
Frari church
Boat out to the Lido
Islands of Burano & Murano
Shopping
Coffee at Florian's
People-watching

Most importantly, just step off the tourist trail & get lost in the back streets - that will fill a couple of days, for a start.

A few food options we enjoyed ...

Osteria Al Squero is good place for cicchetti. Opposite Squero Tramontin – a gondola-making and -repairing boatyard in Dorsoduro.

Take 12 waterbus to Burano. Pretty (colourful houses) and wonky campinile! We had really lovely long lunch at Al gatto nero … recommend for food, atmosphere and service. Need to book.
