Mexico City - worth a trip?

I’ve got the chance to tag along on DH’s work trip for a week or so. Has anyone been? Would you recommend it? It would just be me as DC’s will stay home but is there a lot to see / do? DH will be free in the evenings and also for a 3 day weekend at the end so potentially we could go to a beach part if close by enough. He Possibly may get a bit of time off around meetings in the week also.

Just working out if it’s worth a week of annual leave and the flight cost (accommodation will be free).

I should add that in years gone by I travelled a year by myself through Asia and India plus Oz so I’m not phased by being alone mostly in the daytimes but just wondering if it’s an interesting place to spend a week really.

yup, definitely worth it

Definitely worth it. Go see the Diego Deriviera murals. Also, go to Frieda Kharlos house and Trotsky’s home. You can get a guide to take you out to see some historic remains in the jungle. Also we did a boat trip and were entertained by a mariachi band. Is it a conference? They often lay on trips for accompanying people.

Oh great. No it’s not a conference sadly. Just a work get together (they’re all remote workers) and they have a client who can’t meet in the US due to vaccine laws so plan on meeting there. I’m a tag along but I thought why not as they’ve invited me, not sure if perhaps other partners may also go…! DH and I haven’t been abroad alone together in 12 years so maybe it’s a sign.

We have the opposite situation - I could potentially go to a work thing in Mexico City next month, and DH is debating coming and bringing our toddler DS. Bit different, but they tend to explore together and have fun. Sadly, I'll be working for most of the time we're there. I'm very jealous, it looks like a brilliant place!

Yes, it's a great city. The Anthropology Museum is incredible, one of the world's best (and the building's worth the trip). There's some interesting art to see (Diego and Frida). And some cool neighbourhoods to explore. Enough to fill a week but buy an up-to-date guidebook so you can plan ahead. I remember visiting an amazing food market too, but forget which.

Absolutely worth it. I love it! Just please ask locals which streets and areas you should be avoiding, even the one close to the main Cathedral, as the relatively safe areas can change into very unsafe ones literally from one street to another. And if taking any cash out, try not to use street ATMs - go to a shopping centre or some other public space.

Yes it’s wonderful! The food, the people, the art…Polanco and Condesa are very safe areas with lots of shops and restaurants.
