Looking for do a four night break to either Reims or Epernay later this year.

Would love to hear your experiences- where you stayed, which houses you toured, how to get around, recommendations for hotels etc.

Thank you v much

We’ve stayed overnight in Reims a couple of times when driving back from Italy. So not a ‘champagne break’ specifically but we visited houses both times: Pommery the first time, and then Veuve Clicquot. Both very much recommended! Pommery may have changed as we visited in 2020 and there were still lots of Covid restrictions, so the tour was self-guided for instance. That may be different now. Veuve was great, but definitely a much more ‘commercial’ experience than even Pommery.

Haven’t been to Epernay so can’t comment on that, though we’ve said if we do the trip again we’ll stop there rather than Reims.

Reims is a smallish city so quite easy to get around on foot. We had a car but only because we were stopping over on a longer trip. Many of the houses in Reims are quite close together, e.g. Veuve, Pommery, Ruinart, Taittinger are all beside one another basically. From the cathedral to Veuve is about a 25-minute walk. I can’t recommend accommodation beyond where we stayed - an Ibis, which was fine - but I’m sure there are some lovely options.

Definitely visit the cathedral. And visit the Cave des Sacres wine shop right next to it. Both times we bought mixed cases of smaller producers and they’ve been great to try, including some champagnes specifically for eating with. My husband (who’s very into wine) made us leave at the crack of dawn the second time so we would make it to Reims before that shop closed 😂
