I’m going on my own in July for two nights and am looking for a simple comfortable hotel. I’ll be travelling Eurostar but don’t really want to stay near there. Where would you recommend please?

I recently stayed a couple of nights at Mama Shelter East, it was a pretty good price for Paris. The room was small but had everything you needed, including a microwave and fridge. The shower was good. Everything was clean and the staff lovely.
Its around 10 mins walk from the metro which is a downside. there is a fair selections of bars restaurants and bakeries nearby. I'd recommend it.

Word of warning, if you’re going during the Olympics you may find it a challenge. We’ve got tickets for one event and thought we’d stay in Paris for a couple of nights, but prices are mad. We’re going to get in car and drive south… seriously it was c€600 for a room in an ibis budget.

I have stayed here and really liked it:

Check when Olympics are on. Paris is doubling the price of transport tickets for the period. All of us locals who don’t use monthly passes are bulk buying tickets now before the prices go up.

Paris’ sights are very spread out, so in theory you could stay anywhere, as the metro network is vast and very quick. The Marais is nice. Canal Saint Martin will be cheaper, has lots of bars and restaurants around the canal, and will be walking distance from Gare du Nord depending on where you book.
