My son's passport runs out in october 23. We are going to new york in may and wondered if we need to renew? also if we don't we are going to italy in august, will his passport still be valid?

I've had a look on line and can't get a definitive answer.

Trying to make a decision before the strike.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

What date was it actually issued?

PercyMcPigface · 17/03/2023 12:46

Actually i think that's irrelevant - I think it will need to have 3 months left on it at the end of your holiday to Italy so I think you will need to renew it

Widowtoaworkaholic · 17/03/2023 12:46

Yes you would need to renew as you have to have 6 months validity I believe.

Sarvanga38 · 17/03/2023 12:46

Passports must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave.

For entry to Italy, you can see the rules here: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/italy/entry-requirements#passport-validity-requirements

Your passport must be:

  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For the USA the rules seem more straight forward and are here: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/entry-requirements#passport-validity

If you are visiting the USA your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. You don’t need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this.

You're in a bit of a bind as ideally you would renew now to avoid the summer rush, but there's a risk it wouldn't be back before the USA. You will have to renew before you go to Italy so I would get it done as soon as you get back.

Passport strike for 5 weeks soon

Soontobemumof2x · 17/03/2023 12:55

Yeah I heard it’s going to take up to 10 weeks for passports. So I’d renew now!

tinytemper66 · 17/03/2023 13:07

Passport office workers have voted to strike closer to the summer. Just to be aware.
