Canarian apartment, 4 weeks

poppym12 · 16/03/2023 10:28

I've only ever stayed in hotels so I wondered if anyone could give me tips, websites etc that will help me to book a place for 4 weeks in the Canary Islands?

My preferred location is Fuerteventura but any island near the coast will be ok.

I keep hearing bad reviews of Airbnb and booking..com and as I'm travelling alone I don't want to take any chances.

Would a tour operator be better?

It all depends on your budget and how many are travelling and when you are travelling. There are lots of private apartments to hire in Fuerteventura, and are licenced and check regularly to make sure they still comply with all the local laws regarding private renting.

poppym12 · 16/03/2023 10:41

My budget is flexible for a well equipped, clean and comfortable place.

As I mentioned, I'll be travelling alone and would like to go asap.

Could you tell me where I can find privately rented places please? I don't know where people advertise.

Have a look at

VRBO
Air BNB
Simply Owners
😊

rookiemere · 16/03/2023 12:18

OP AirBnB and VRBO are basically just advertising platforms. Pick a property that has multiple high reviews over a period of time and you should be fine.

Just remember with Airbnb in particular you need to flag any issues up with them within 24 hours or possibly less, but if you rent a well reviewed place that's not likely to be a concern.

Worth also asking for a discount because of duration of stay.

Or join a local fb group and ask

Isseywith3witchycats · 16/03/2023 16:19

Look on facebook at the feurteventura forum theres people ask on there about apartments and the people on there point in the right direction and some of the owners of apartments to rent are on there and also lots of info about different resorts

poppym12 · 16/03/2023 17:15

I don't use Facebook so I'll need to do it via a website.

This is for Lanzarote. I haven't booked accommodation through this website, only car hire, but never any problems. It's run by an English couple who've lived in Lanzarote for about 20 years.

I've asked for details for a few properties from the Fuerteventura and Lanzarote websites linked here.

Looking at VRBO and Airbnb, it seems more cost effective for a group or a family as many of the places are 2+ bedrooms.

Airbnb is fine if you choose carefully, we have used them all over the world with no issues.
We don’t share though, we only rent the whole property and read the description and reviews carefully

I can recommend a no frills but lovely small apartment complex in Puerto Del Carmen old town fab views looking over the harbour.
Agua Marina, book direct pay on arrival.

poppym12 · 17/03/2023 23:16

I'd be interested in the details if you could pm me please @Newlifeintherain ?

Have a look on the following FB group "Playa Blanca, Lanzarote". A lot of FB groups are run by villa companies but this is run by local ex pats.

Top of my own wish-list for an apartment is El Cotillo in Fuerteventura, there seem to be lots of options (Tripadvisor?)

poppym12 · 20/03/2023 22:46

I love it there @Identifyingasadolphin but I'm not sure I could amuse myself for 4 weeks without a car.

DH and I have booked an air bnb for Fuerteventura in May. When we first looked there was a huge choice of studios and 1 bedroom apartment but they seems to get booked up really quickly.

We have used Homeaway/owners direct a lot in the Algarve and have never been disappointed

poppym12 · 21/03/2023 11:09

Found one on Airbnb but it says it's new so has no reviews. Also says it's via bookiply.

Is this one to avoid?

OP posts:
rookiemere · 21/03/2023 14:47

I would avoid properties with no reviews.

poppym12 · 22/03/2023 12:37

I've booked one via Kirsty, mentioned by a previous poster.
Hope I don't hate it or lose money.

Newlifeintherain · 22/03/2023 13:47

Enjoy poppy. If possible scout out some other places whilst you are there. For future reference, that's what I usually do.
Are you staying in Fuerteventura?

poppym12 · 22/03/2023 22:29

Yes, Fuerteventura. I love all of the Canary Islands for different reasons but as I've got older, I'm preferring how laid back and comparatively quiet Fuerteventura is to the other big ones.

I have found booking.com good when something didn't go to plan, if you book direct you have no one to help you

NCTDN · 23/03/2023 21:40

Ooh enjoy! 4 weeks in the canaries - fabulous!
