Cheapest city breaks

Surprising boyfriend for 30th in July (bloody school holidays birthday) and want to book a city break but not sure where!

Been to krakow years ago which I loved (he hasn’t been) and was thinking maybe the below:

warsaw (worried it’s not a nice looking place)
budapest (flights are expensive and hotels don’t seem that cheap)
madrid
bratislava

He’s already been to Prague so don’t want to go to there and the prices of Amsterdam are horrendous! Just seeing whether people know of some hidden gems 🤗

It's a few years since I went to Budapest but it's a lovely city with lots to see and do, and prices were quite cheap once there.
Riga or Tallin?

Ylvamoon · 15/03/2023 15:46

We're going Porto soon- been told it's beautiful!

I went to Gdansk last year. A beautiful city with great museums, lots of history and the added bonus of beaches a tram ride away. Very cheap and we loved it.

FiFiWrites · 15/03/2023 15:54

Lisbon

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 15/03/2023 15:56

Riga! Cheap and beautiful.

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 15/03/2023 15:58

Also Geneva. If you can get a cheap flight, it's not the expensive city you'd imagine. You can get a free public transport pass, and as for food, a few bread buns and some ham and cheese from Lidl, boom! That's what I did and I loved every minute.

Lollypop0101 · 15/03/2023 16:29

I looked at tallin but the flights alone are over £300 each 🫣 love to go to Riga but he’s already been there too! Where the flights are cheaper the hotels are more expensive and vice versa 😂 I wouldn’t normally care too much about the cost of stuff but still on maternity leave it’s a struggle to save!

madrid is fabulous and food is wonderful so is st sebastian
Just look on skyscanner re the cheapest places for the dates and have a wonderful time!!

LlynTegid · 15/03/2023 19:49

Leiden or Haarlem are near enough to Amsterdam for you to visit whilst there.

Ghent is lovely.

NuffSaidSam · 15/03/2023 19:50

Barcelona is great.

I'd have a look at flights and see where is within budget and go from there. Almost everywhere will have cheap hotels available. Then look at what there is to do low cost/free when you're there.

Lyon
Athens
Valencia

None particularly secret/underrated, but all lovely and vibrant with much to see, do and eat!

Funf · 15/03/2023 20:07

emmathedilemma · 15/03/2023 20:07

Have looked into booking a package with flights and hotels? It might be cheaper.

waggamamar · 15/03/2023 20:08

Lux is cheap to get too. Am going for work and will report back. It may be a little boring

Have you tried popping the month into Skyscanner and looking at cheapest flights around your dates/nearest airports then working out a short list to look in to?

mummyh2016 · 15/03/2023 20:23

I really enjoyed Seville but will be scorching in July.

Whichnumbers · 15/03/2023 20:24

Lyon
arnhem
Antwerp

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 15/03/2023 20:26

Alicante is lovely and flights are very cheap.

Kiwi.com is a good site for cheap flights.

TizerorFizz · 15/03/2023 20:45

Dublin or Cork. Anywhere Ryanair goes! Edinburgh. Plenty to see and do. Off peak travel is a bargain. Cheap flights in July have probably gone by now and there’s nothing cheap about flying now.

Slimjimtobe · 15/03/2023 20:47

Lisbon is great and so it Porto
we loved Krakow and Gdańsk also

emmathedilemma · 15/03/2023 22:05

Jeez I would not class dublin or Edinburgh as cheap! Hotels are £££

Shopgirl1 · 15/03/2023 22:07

Berlin

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/03/2023 22:13

Prague
Out of the euro is always going to be cheaper.
