Passport office did not link my documents to my child's application-now docs are in transit back to me!

Has anyone experienced this and know what I could do?

I applied to renew my DDs passport at the same time as renewing mine and updating my name (gone back to birth surname). I sent both our passports, my supporting docs including my birth certificate and a letter explaining I wanted the docs to be shared between the application, as instructed to do so both in my email and on the phone.

They've emailed today to say mine has been approved but my child's has not been because they need to see my birth certificate to prove why my name on the application is different to their records.

I phoned them to ask why as they have my birth certificate already. They didn't link the applications and have therefore treated mine completely separate to my DDs and "no longer have" my birth certificate. I now need to wait up to 10 weeks to get my birth cert back in the post to then resend to them for my DDs application! This seems completely mad but the person on the phone said there is nothing they can do.

Is there anyone in the know who can advise what could be done? I'm also unsure it'll even be relevant by the time I get my passport back as their records will by then show the correct name? Really wish I'd just done my DDs passport now and updated mine at a later date!
