How strict is RyanAir on luggage SIZE?

Hey everyone.

Going away this summer to Portugal & I have paid for
1x 20kg suitcase for one person
Then
3x 10kg check in bags

My question is regarding the 10kg check in bags, I naively thought as long as they're below 10kg that will be fine. But I've done some digging and can see RyanAir restrict the size (55x40x20cm)

How strict are they on this sizing?

I was just looking at some "cabin" suitcases and even they are too big 😩

Note; these are check in bags, not ones we will have with us on the plane in the cabin

Checked in bags never measured but cabin every single time and I've used them a dozen times over the last few years. Mine haven't been but they have had staff in the boarding line eyeing up bags and measuring them. Last time one guys was just the wheels and he emptied it, used a barrier bag and his friends case and dumped his case 😲

Thanks - were the checked in bags 10Kg or 20kg? It seems this is a new offering as part of the family package! The 10Kg bags are checked in but very unclear on whether there are size restrictions. I’ll be able to come back and report by the end of next week but concerned as my 10kg is bigger than the ‘cabin size’ 10kg bag.

I doubt they are strict on the size of bags being checked in as they are just put on the scales to be weighed. I didn't know there was a size limit on the 20kg cases and we just used our usual ones. We bought smaller Ryanair sized backpacks for our hand luggage and they weren't checked for size. They maybe just check those that look like they might be larger.

Also got a medical exemption letter thing so dh could take his CPAP on board free of charge and that wasn't looked at either even though I bust a gut to get it sorted out before we left.

Although we nearly never made our flight due to the queues at Edinburgh Airport so maybe we looked too flustered and pissed off to be argued with 😆

The size they talk about are for cabin bags the checked in bags have a larger size limit but in reality it's the weight that matters

Same for my DH CPAP - they never look at the letter!!!

FYI for anyone reading this worrying - the 10kg check in bags do not have to be the size of in cabin bags, they are completely checked in so no need to use the crazy small cages.

There is no method of measuring bags on the check in belts. It is only weight that is checked.

Just spoke to the Ryan Air Customer support. They stated, 10kg Check-In Bag (weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm)

Does suck, as mentioned before, there is nothing on the website when booking giving you dimensions.

My bag is 58 cm(L)28 cm(W)''28 cm, so will take a gamble when checking it in for the hold.

Anymore updates on this? Anyone recently flown with 10KG CHECKED bag (NOT CABIN) t that was over the dimensions started for cabin 10kg bag 55x40x20

im not flying till august but got the family plus ticket so we all get 10kg checked bag- I don’t want to have to purchase new bags to go in the hold of not measured. My current ones are 59x39X18

I asked Ryanair and they confirmed that the same dimensions applied., so we bought cabin size bags.

They didn't check the dimensions of anything but I think this is pretty normal - most of the time they don't, but they get their money by occasionally clamping down.

We bought soft rucksack style Cabinmax cabin bags, and I wouldn't recommend these for checked luggage. Because of the rucksack straps they didn't go through the main check in gate. We had to take them round the corner to be checked in with buggies and oversize items. It wasn't really a problem, it took 5 mins but I'd choose different bags next time. Especially as we found we were well under the weight limits anyway.

We were probably over-cautious, but it suits us not to have the extra worry.

Never been checked before boarding but I am an obsessive one-bagger. I use CabinMax for Ryan Air with compression cubes and can get away with the free small size.

I’m thinking I may risk it as the cost of buying new bags May put weight the penalty

I did yes, they didnt even blink when I was checking it in. As long as not seriously over sized, they do not care. Weight is the issue. Bag I checked in was, 58 cm(L)28 cm(W)''28 cm(H)

Update on our trip:
No measurements taken for check in luggage, just weighed

No measurements or weights checked for hand luggage :)

They will charge you every way they can so don't bother unless your bag is exactly what they specify .

Is this for Ryanair? You're allowed up to 55x40x20, and there's a bunch of those on Amazon.co.uk. If you really need 50x40x20 then put "cabin bag 50x40x20" into the Amazon search bar and it will find several, albeit interspersed with the 55cm length ones. You have to do some clicking, but there are plenty of options.

That said, they don't check every bag, because even if they wanted to catch you out for 56cm long versus 55, or 21 deep versus 20, they don't have time to. If it looks like a normal wheely bag it will get on. The people you see being told to check their bags in the sizer are generally taking the piss with huge rucksacks.

Primark is the best place for Ryanair compatible bags IMO.

Cheap but you can see them in person and check the quality unlike random amazon ones and they aren't coming from who knows where taking ages to arrive.

My mums just given me a ‘small’ suitcase and I thought it looked huge but measured it and it’s 55x40x20. I think that’s actually quite a decent size so it’s surprised me so many people on this thread are saying it’s small!

Another thing, I regularly check in a 10kg bag in airports with self service machines. The machine doesn't care what size my bag/suitcase is, all that machine wants to know is if my bag is max of 10kg.

So as I said in a previous post ages ago, size doesn't matter for check in, but the weight definitely does. Obviously not a trunk, but anything near the overhead size will do fine for 10kg. No need to get the measuring tape out.

Bringing the bag on board is a different issue. Size really CAN matter there!

Has anyone done this recently ? How strict with the measurements are they! About 4 hours from going through security and mine is 55x40x21 😂 it’s 10kg checked in I have booked
