How strict is RyanAir on luggage SIZE?

MrsBargain · 10/03/2023 16:04

Hey everyone.

Going away this summer to Portugal & I have paid for
1x 20kg suitcase for one person
Then
3x 10kg check in bags

My question is regarding the 10kg check in bags, I naively thought as long as they're below 10kg that will be fine. But I've done some digging and can see RyanAir restrict the size (55x40x20cm)

How strict are they on this sizing?

I was just looking at some "cabin" suitcases and even they are too big 😩

Note; these are check in bags, not ones we will have with us on the plane in the cabin

Thanks for reading Grin

www.ryanair.com/gb/en/useful-info/help-centre/ryanair-uk-terms-and-conditions0/termsandconditionsar_696869348

It's here in their terms and conditions under 8.3.3
10kg check-in bags have the same size dimensions as cabin bags.

You already posted that and I've also referred to it in multiple posts.

You’ve got to make sure it fits under the seat if it’s a 10kg check in bag . I got a couple of bags online Amazon that fitted loads in but was the Ryanair measurement so it’s worth it . Funnily enough the cabin crew let me put in overhead locker probably because plenty of space as most choose a bag they can fit under seat . I’ve never experienced anyone checking my carry on bag size though but maybe it depends if your trying to take massive suitcase as your carry on.

No, the 10kg bags do not have to fit under the seat. This is incorrect.

Yes. And lots of people keep saying there's no size limit when there clearly is.

I wasn't addressing you, so no idea why you're being snippy.

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 10/03/2023 19:33

Because I went to great length to explain the legal interaction between the General Conditions and the information given at booking from a consumer law perspective but you just keep repeating that it is in the General Conditions, as if that is the definitive answer.

CottonSock · 10/03/2023 19:47

To be honest, how big is a 10kg bag going to be anyway ... its going to have to be pretty small. I can take 4 of them.

Like this. I think you've booked the same op.

Yes that's what we booked!

I’ve never flown on Ryanair, but I’ve read enough posts on various sites over the years to believe that their entire business model relies on charging people who go over the size limit by a mm or more rarely the weight limit by a mg.

LadyEloise1 · 10/03/2023 20:34

I just wish Ryanair would give us branded examples of what is allowed.
As in this brand bag is allowed, this brand bag would be charged extra.
Obviously choose big brand names.

ThePoshUns · 10/03/2023 20:39

Really strict

HamFrancisco · 10/03/2023 16:17

Is there a reason why you're not combining the weight into one or two bigger bags? Wouldn't that be cheaper? The size you've described is tiny, that's under-seat type of size isn't it?

No, the underwear bag is tiny! Handbag size tiny.

incognitodorrito · 10/03/2023 20:48

Super strict, they will charge you ££££ at the gate or you not allow you to board.

BertieBotts · 10/03/2023 20:50

Underwear bag Grin That really is travelling light! Just a change of pants.

PillBoxes · 10/03/2023 20:57

Off season and non stag/hen destination flights are quite relaxed regarding bag sizes. Once the bag is not like an elephant's trunk and looks like it will fit overhead or under the seat, no measuring took place. Where folk were obviously taking the p*ss they were taken aside. I'm talking mostly about huge backpacks that would not fit under the seat.

I observed this in Dublin, Seville Malaga Bologna and Pisa. All this year so far. Sorry if that sounds smug or anything but retirement ya know!

I like Ryanair a lot. Once you know the rules, obey them and you'll be fine. Their punctuality (apart from weather events and strikes) is brilliant too.

Those who dislike RyR are free to do so. But in my experience it is often because these people broke the rules and expected special treatment. Nope not happening. And that's good for everyone who does obey the T+Cs.

Totally agree.

I think for bags in the hold , they're strict on weight. I've been charge excess before. It was £15 per kilo 😬

And so they should, for the sake of everyone whose case is not overweight.

I have a little scales that connects to the case handle. It is digital and is very accurate.

A tip ... if you are checking in a bag you can put your case on ANY free weighing belt on any airline and get an instant weight. Obviously that would be where there is no one queing for said airline! I do this any time I feel I'm cutting it fine. Those weighing belts are very well calibrated.

Whyisitsososohard · 10/03/2023 21:27

Yeah sorry they're really strict. They're such a shit airline too. I try to avoid them when possible. But often not possible!

MrsBargain · 10/03/2023 21:42

Thank you everyone for your replies

Most people mentioning how strict they are give examples of it being for carry on luggage

Has anyone got any examples of size restrictions for check in luggage?

I wouldn't chance it, I can see them being as strict with checked in luggage as they are with carry on. Not sure how they'd penalise you though 🤷‍♂️

Would be very easy for them to penalise you by charging to 'upgrade' the luggage from 10kg to 20kg which can be larger in size as well as weight.

Whether you get penalised would really depend how obvious it was they were oversized/if they were over 10kg/whether the check in person was a jobsworth. To be honest its very easy to put 10kg in a 55/40/20 bag so you really don't want any bigger.

newjobnewstartihope · 10/03/2023 23:06

It's not just to make money.
When I was coming back from Austria the airline wasn't strict on hand luggage size and when I got on the flight(one of the last) there was no room in any of the overhead lockers for my cabin bag so had to sit with it under my seat

Totally agree about cabin bags, but this thread is about check in bags,

rebecca100 · 10/03/2023 23:13

I have flown with Ryanair many times with just the 10kg allowance and those dimensions. They have never checked my bag for the weight or dimensions, but wouldn't risk it through fear of additional fees.

userxx · 10/03/2023 23:13

@newname12345 with you, the smaller bags will cost less. I've avoided paying for luggage with Ryan Air, so not sure how it works exactly.
