How strict is RyanAir on luggage SIZE?

Hey everyone.

Going away this summer to Portugal & I have paid for
1x 20kg suitcase for one person
Then
3x 10kg check in bags

My question is regarding the 10kg check in bags, I naively thought as long as they're below 10kg that will be fine. But I've done some digging and can see RyanAir restrict the size (55x40x20cm)

How strict are they on this sizing?

I was just looking at some "cabin" suitcases and even they are too big 😩

Note; these are check in bags, not ones we will have with us on the plane in the cabin

I have flown with Ryanair many times with just the 10kg allowance and those dimensions. They have never checked my bag for the weight or dimensions, but wouldn't risk it through fear of additional fees.

But how did you know what the permitted dimensions were?

@NeverApologiseNeverExplain the dimensions in the original post is the allowance for the 10kg carry on that goes in the overhead locker which is what I go by.

This is what I refer to on their site however mine is always carry on, not a checked in bag.

I assumed because of the size she was talking about that it was for the 10kg carry on. I didn't realise it was for a checked in bag.

We flew to Gran Canaria with Ryanair last year. Our bags were not checked at any point and i'm pretty sure they weren't the right size. Although judging by this thread this seems to be the minority.

I've never seen check in bags not checked at least for weight. Or are you talking about cabin bags (which this thread is not about)?

I used the chat function just now. Chatbot just said 10kg , no mention of dimensions, but when I think I got through to a real person they said 55x40x20 for checked in 10kg bag. 20kg bags are 81x119x119.

If they enforce it that's awful, it's really buried. I couldn't find it on their website anywhere other than Condition 8.3.3 as PPs have posted, and I waited in a queue of nearly 200 to ask the question to an actual person.

I have a suitcase that expands, I think without the expanded bit it should just fit their dimensions. I'm tempted to attempt to check it in in its expanded state to see if they say anything, and report back.

How can a tag and drop machine measure size though? Surely it can only measure weight. I have never seen a desk check in person measure bags either, it is all on weight. On that basis I'd not be too worried as you are paying by weight for checked bags, whereas for onboard bags SIZE matters!

I've flown lots with them and they usually always leave it so late to get everyone on the plane that they never ask anyone to put their bags in the size thing. I've seen some bags that I think are huge and even they just get through no bother.

The problem is it's a chance u take! U cld be asked to put ur bag in the bast size checker and then get made to put it in the hold and charged £40/£50 to put ur bag in the hold.

Sorry notice u talking about checked in baggage. I've never noticed anyone having issues when queuing to check in but most folk prob checking in 20kg luggage.

I've seen passengers requested to put their cabin bag into the "measuring device" & people have been charged for extra luggage per kilo before boarding

It does happen

Sshhhh @theunbelonging I can picture Michael O' Leary getting on the phone (possibly from Cheltenham) to the Portuguese office asking why the hell people were allowed on without paying the excess weight baggage charges !!!!

They also did not differentiate between the paid for cabin bag and the free 'under seat' bag .
You could put any bag into the overhead bins too .
So a different experience to everyone else here !

Unless you checked luggage in your experience is not what OP is asking about though. This is about luggage handed over at the bag drop/Check in desk to go in the hold.

Did they weigh your 20kg checked bag and measure the bag? I am trying to see if I need to purchase another bag to fit dimensions of it. I paid for the 20kg checked bag but do not want to risk the dimensions if they are slightly off.
