Would you recommend Athens in April half term, and what are good areas to stay in?

Plaka is a nice area and walkable to main sights.

+1 for Plaka. Fab area and very walkable. Love Athens - very jealous.

We stayed in the Hotel Plaka in the Plaka district. Not the most swish hotel but nothing wrong with it as a base. It had an amazing host who, at breakfast, would come around each table and have a chat to you about what your plans for the day were and then give you advice about getting there etc. She spoke to us in English, another table in French, another in German. Easy to walk to all the historic sites that we wanted to see.

Another vote for Hotel Plaka. It has a lovely roof terrace too.

Easy to get to from the airport, a supermarket just over the road for any snacks you may need

The breakfast room was great also. They cleared it but left out biscuits and drink making facilities that you could use any time in the day.

I would highly recommended the coco mat bc hotel, it’s a gorgeous hotel in a great location and it has a roof terrace with pool overlooking the acropolis but is really reasonably priced. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Kolonaki In Athens is a very nice district. That’s where Coco-Mat Hotel is, I believe.Toney, as the Americans would say.

We stayed at the Home and Poetry in Plaka - would thoroughly recommend.

An unpopular, and somewhat unhelpful opinion... Avoid Athens altogether. The history is interesting, but the city itself is ugly and dirty

If we turned one way from the Plaka district there was the square which was quite nice. I'm still annoyed I didn't venture into one of the lace shops and bring back a tablecloth!

Another way to all the historic sites, which were beautiful, and the reason we went there in the first place (DD's birthday trip and she is a history buff).

Yet another way into the modern parts. Hated them. So much touting in the streets. And so many beggars, inc memorably, a man who made his 2 young boys sit on his lap under a blanket for long hours, to gain sympathy and donations. V sad.
