Currency for Mexico

Is it better to take pesos, US dollars or a combination? We're going to Cancun so very touristy/ Americanised.

I spent a month in Mexico, & just used pesos everywhere. DH had both. Fancy restaurants took USD, but local shops, taxis etc wanted pesos.
