Can anyone suggest a nice stop off town on the way to Biarritz please?

For one or two nights, a pretty town or village or somewhere with a lake or river or something. I have no idea where to start so would love any ideas!

We are driving.

We stayed in Cognac last year on the way to the Pyrenees' very pretty place, a little bit off the A10 but we turned of the autoroute 20 or so km before we had too and rejoined 30 or 40k further down, stopping off in a lovely boulangerie for food for a picnic later on in the day - broke the boredom of the m/way.

In the Loire valley, Chinon, Saumur and Langeais are lovely.

Thanks so much for these recommendations! Just looked at the places in the Loire valley, beautiful! I think we will do cognac one way then Saumur on the way back .
