Where to go?!

I want to book a summer holiday but not sure where to go. Kids will be 6, 15 and 16. It’s difficult to please everyone. We aren’t a beach holiday type of family plus can’t really afford that kind of thing. I’m thinking of maybe a city break but where would be good for 6 year old? I’ve been to Paris several times so fancy somewhere different. Also we’ve done a eurocamp type before but the ridiculously long drive from the North west puts me off (we’ve just come back from Disneyland Paris so it’s raw 😂). Open to UK holiday ideas too. We like to be busy but able to relax if we need to…

How about the Alps? Hotels, apartments and chalets are good value in the summer. I recommend Austria for hotels-Half board is always a good deal and family type rooms are common. For chalets-the French Alps is great in the summer. Some resorts have lift passes and buses for a couple of euros a day-and it’s exciting to go up in a lift then do some amazing mountain walks. Lovely lakes for swimming too and weather is warm.
City breaks can be very expensive if you have a family. I would stick to the cheaper ones that still have lots to see-like Cracow. Munich is a good place for all ages-parks, museums and amazing pizza. I did a couple of days in Munich then took the train to Austria where the hotel picked us up-was a single parent with 2 preteen kids then and it was really good fun. Nice spa in the hotel.

If you are outdoorsy how about Alps, Southern Bavaria? Italian Lakes?

City trip - Berlin? Try to get an appartment instead of a hotel.

Your older ones could do some things on their own.

Take a short cut from the North to the Netherlands! P&O has an overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. We love it - it’s basically a floating hotel with bars, restaurants, cinema etc…. From Rotterdam, it’s only a 40 minutes drive to Duinrell or an hour to Beekse Bergen (our two favourite places to stay in the Netherlands). Duinrell has bike hire and from the park we’ve cycled to loads of good attractions in The Hague and Scheveningen.

Came here to say Munich then a train via Garmisch to Innsbruck.

Fabulous.

Get the Innsbruck pass and in Munich go for a day to Michaelibad

How about Valencia as a city break? It’s on the coast which is nice, and has a great aquarium so stuff for the 6 year old. It’s generally just a lovely city to mooch around with parks etc.

Mallorca. A few days in Palma which is lovely then get the wooden tourist train to Soller and stay there for a few days with a trip on the lovely tram down to Port de Soller.
