West coast Scottish coastal village?

Hello,

We’re Off to Scotland this summer. Originally we’d looked at staying around Glencoe but the places are very expensive. Are there are slightly more busy, pretty villages near the coast anyone can recommend?

The second half of our holiday is on Mull so ideally within 2 hours drive of the Mull crossing.

thank you!

Which crossing will you be using? There's 3 different ones in summer.

SubParbanMum · 24/02/2023 20:58

Ahh! We we were going to use Oban - Craignure but open to others.

Try looking around Ardnamurchan. It's a peninsula but you can get a small ferry at Corran to get across so easily accessible. Fantastic beaches there. It means you would get the Kilchoan Ferry to Mull which goes right into Tobermory so you get the most amazing views of Mull as you arrive.

Great tip, thank you! Staying near Tobermory so that would be perfect.

Just also remembered that you could do a day trip into Fort William if nearby and it's also near to the Glenfinnian Viaduct which is the Harry Potter train bridge, if you're into that.

Dunoon is nice, a 2 hour drive from Oban. Lots of good independent shops, fab bakery. On the coast. There's a holiday village called Hunter's Quay.

I live near Oban so can help with anything in that area. Mull is lovely.

MattressKing4 · 24/02/2023 22:34

Mallaig is meant to be nice too. An hour from Fort William, 2 hours from Oban.

Tarbert? It’s an attractive little place and quite popular.
We stayed near there one year & pretty much all our excursions involved stopping there for a wander.
It’s only an hour or so from Oban (which was one of our excursions, there’s a wonderful NT garden there)

Don't forget a wee trip to Iona, it is gorgeous.

In summer we go over to Mull from Lochaline to Fishnish which is halfway up the island between Craignure and Tobermory.

We normally drive to Fort William and fill the car with fuel in Morrisons (fuel is more expensive on Mull because of the cost of bringing the tankers over from the mainland). Then cross the loch at Corran before driving up to Lochaline.

On my to do list is a trip to Staffa to see Fingals cave and a whale watching trip. We've already seen eagles, basking sharks and seals on previous trips. We have family on Mull so my knowledge of accommodation for hire is nil.

Plockton is beautiful.

Dunoon- the view out is good but the town's a dump!

Ullapool and surrounds is lovely if you can go that far north.

The villages of Cove and Kilcreggan, 20 minutes west of Helensburgh, aren’t well known but are a real hidden gem! Beautiful views across to Cumbrae and Arran

Stayed in Kilchoan for many years - short ferry ride to Tobermory - Kilchoan 5 miles drive to beautiful Sanna sands… many happy family holiday memories

merriedancer · 09/04/2023 21:13

Tarbert, Ardfern, Tayvallich. Tarbert a small town, the other two pretty villages each with nice restaurants and lots of walks and places to go round about.
And you can get down to the Mull of Kintyre easily from there which is gorgeous.

Noodle421 · 09/04/2023 21:13

Sorry, just re read your original post - Kilchoan is in no way busy. Very little in the way of facilities or entertainment. It’s a very small and quiet village set in breath taking wilderness.

Inveraray is lovely with nice places to eat and things to do nearby
