Holiday with young adult DC

Both our DC are now at uni but are still keen to come on holiday for us in the summer, so long as we can find a week when they do not have other plans! DH and i are very pleased about this. They will be 19 and 20 in the summer. We think we have tied down a week, possibly even 10 days (DD2 just checking dates of one plan), so now need to decide where to go.

Our usual summer holiday since they have been older teens has been Greek Islands (a few different ones over the years, all of which we have loved). However, DD1 is going Greek island hopping with friends so we want to try somewhere different. I would love to get some suggestions of what has worked well with that age group.
Main criteria in the past have been as follows, but we are open to any suggestions:

  1. Sunny
  2. On/near a beach
  3. Walking distance or short taxi to some nightlife for the DC (can be fairly gentle nightlife)
  4. Easy to get around, either by bus or hire car
  5. Other things to do apart from lying by the pool/beach, e.g. in Greece we tend to hire little boats and explore local coves; DC might have a day at the water park; we might explore a couple of local towns or historic sites

Ideally Europe rather than long-haul. I was thinking Croatia as we can visit Split or Dubrovnik plus also an island or two, but wondering if it might be too similar to greek islands.

Take a look at Kotor, Montenegro? Stunning scenery, beautiful old town, lots of water, tonnes of restaurants and a nightclub and cheaper than Croatia

You could do 6 days in France and 4 days in Brugge.

Depending on your budget I'd say you have about 50000 options on that basis. Pretty much anywhere on the coastline of Europe. Personally, I'd look at somewhere like the south of france (Nice or one of the surrounding towns/villages) or perhaps Spain.

Scandinavia is supposed to be amazing in summer - you can do lakes and boat trips etc. I've never been but know lots of people who have - Norway seems particularly popular.

How about a beach holiday you can visit cities from for some variety ? Sitges in Spain , beautiful (safe!) Beach town near to Barcelona so can dip in and out of there

Amalfi coast Italy ?

FinnRussell · 21/02/2023 11:13

Sitges?
Sicily?
Palma?

gogohmm · 21/02/2023 12:03

Sicily would be my best bet, it's lovely! Drag them up Etna, explore the little streets and bars In Taormina, Syracuse was really interesting, Greek ruins. Not really lout nightlife but plenty of bars and ideal for parents and adult children to spend evenings together

Or why not Spain - we are going to Ibiza, theres life in this old dog yet!

My DC came with us on holiday until they were early 20s. One still does.
What worked well when they were 19/20 was a cruise. We did a few but the one visiting Split and Dubrovnik was a big hit. A good mix of sightseeing and good food. The nightlife on board was enough for them but not exactly clubbing.

Other trips that worked.
Costa Adeje Tenerife. Siam Park for water thrills, boat trips, good nightlife a taxi ride away.
Corralejo Fuertaventura. Water sports, DS hired a car and drove us round the island. Nightlife good in the sense of lots of music bars.

Ours have been on cruises with us since being about 3 and 6, the teen years they loved as if you go with Royal Carribean or Celebrity they have proper teen and children activities they still have friends all over the world who they met on cruises
