Greece vs Caribbean

Benporat · 20/02/2023 12:43

Going on hols for two weeks with dh. Without kids. In June.

Can either go to Greece and do ‘non mainstream’ island like Sifnos or Serifos OR we can go to the Caribbean. Maybe Grenada or Nevis.

We went to Greece last summer and loved it. Went to the Caribbean the year before and enjoyed.

We usually self cater and eat out a few times to save money. Found eating out in Greece actually quite expensive but supermarkets about the same price as here (inner London).

I vote the Caribbean, but dh is put off the crazy supermarket prices.

We went to the Caribbean twice last year but wasn't blown away on either occasion
Depends what you want really

countdowntonap · 21/02/2023 13:21

I can recommend Syros and Tinos in Greece as non-mainstream islands. Only 20 mins apart so great for a dual stay.

gogohmm · 21/02/2023 13:24

The price difference between the two is quite a lot, what is your budget? It's the edge of hurricane season by June too

Sillyheadoooooo · 21/02/2023 13:26

Do an adults only all inclusive in Greece, then you don’t need to worry about food costs and an all in in Greece would cost the same as self catering Caribbean. Plus way less time travelling.

countdowntonap · 21/02/2023 13:30

I also thought Syros and Tinos were incredibly cheap (compared to Mykonos) - from car hire to beach clubs.

Benporat · 21/02/2023 19:48

We have an expiring flight voucher with BA to use. It's a sunk cost and has to be used on flights. So we could either be 'profligate' and spend it on Business class flights to Greece at nice times, or we could use it for bog standard Econ/maybe premium Econ over to the Caribbean.

I'd go business class to Greece over economy to the Caribbean. Less flying time too, no jet lag, less chance of extreme weather. God, I'd love to go to Greece in June with DH!

I’m doing Caribbean and Greece this year, but at completely different times of the year (February and September).

I think if you’re travelling in June, you might as well go to Greece. Save the Caribbean for when you can get away for winter sun.

Benporat · 21/02/2023 20:34

Thank you for the responses! I think you're right. Greece is for our summer, and the Caribbean for our winter.

My heart says go to the Carib and my head says go to Greece.

Plus, we probably wouldn't actually go to the Caribbean during the peak season as for example, the airbnb we are looking at is £300 a night versus £100 a night in low season.

Hurricanes are a risk obviously. I grew up in a tropical country, so I'm used to tropical rains/usually overnight and or brief downpours. It's very different to the rain you get here.

I would go to the Caribbean. Completely agree with you about tropical rain being different to British rain. But what you can't avoid, is the risk of hurricanes. Some islands are more likely to be hit than others.

The Caribbean in peak season is over priced in my opinion. Much better to fly to Thailand or somewhere in the Indian Ocean. I doubt there is much difference between Greek high season and Caribbean low season, when it comes to costs.

That being said, Greece in the summer is lovely if you pick the right island. Avoid anywhere with an airport that flies internationally as that usually means the island is busier. Have you thought about going to somewhere like Amorgos? or maybe Pholegandro? We self cater a lot in Greece as not a huge fan of the food at cheaper restaurants.

BeatricePortinari · 23/02/2023 19:58

Greece. Always Greece.
We do both, but Caribbean for winter sun.

If Greece was hot in the winter I'd go there winter and summer.

The Caribbean is great for nice hotels and beaches but it doesn't have the same barefoot back to basics vibe you get in Greece.

Caribbean feels like there's the tourist version and the real version and they are poles apart.
Greece feels like as a tourist you get to experience a bit of Greece at it's best.

ohfibonacci · 23/02/2023 20:56

Oh difficult! Both. Love Greece and the Caribbean (only been to Barbados but loved it) Two of my favourite places. Barbados prices are crazy though. And I wouldn’t bother with Business short haul. Total waste of money! Put it towards the Caribbean for next time!

Nagam · 24/02/2023 09:42

Another vote for the Caribbean. It also rains in the Caribbean peak season too.

I find Greek islands to be arid and uncomfortable. Caribbean has a 'tropical' feel which you can't get in the eastern med.

IVFNewbie · 24/02/2023 10:00

Been to both many times. Caribbean trips were work financed holidays. Would pick Greece every single time.

Benporat · 24/02/2023 12:11

As it happens my cousin owns a house in Saint Lucia and they’ve invited us to stay at their place. So that’s that settled.

Haha! @Benporat Exactly. I think either options sounds fab. Lucky you! We’re off to Greece ourselves.
