What’s the perfect holiday with two boys aged 13 and 9?

We are keeping it a bit low key next year but the year after we will have kids these ages and would like to do a really spectacular holiday. Not skiing or anything hugely sporty.

They loved Disney but of course will be a bit older then. We’ve also been to Lapland at Christmas which was another bucket list holiday.

I am thinking maybe Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Safari or back to Florida and do a multi centre Universal/Disney and maybe Naples for a week?

Any suggestions welcome

Barbados
West coast of America road trip

Last year we flew to Calgary, did a few days doing guided hikes (finding actual Dino fossils) in Dinosaur Provincial Park and then the Royal Tyrell Museum but really could have done a week and then went to the Rockies, staying in Canmore and Jasper doing all the hiking we could fit in, all easy hikes as DH has a heart condition. It was amazing and I’d consider going back next year again.

Quite a random place but Slovenia is great. We. Went for two weeks and stayed in Ljubljana, headed to the coast (Piran) via some amazing caves and a castle built into a cliff, then up to the Julian Alps, and a stunning drive across to Lake Bled to stay in a treehouse. Very easy to get around, beautiful places, lots to see and do. One of my favourite holidays ever. My children were 5, 9 and 13 at the time.

@Badabingy we love Slovenia! We went last year and going back this year.
Thanks for the guys. Lots of road trips which I struggle with (in my imagination) as can’t think what to do with the kids.
I really fancy Sri Lanka or Costa Rica. Kids prefer camping tbh!

Costa Rica. Wonderful combination of active and wildlife. Small group tours work well.

Sorry Cape Town. Blame my fat fingers

We want to go to Costa Rica!

Our DC loved Mexico - swimming with turtles in the wild, Sian Kaan biosphere where we saw crocs, turtles, dolphins, puffa fish etc, swimming with whale sharks outside Cancun, dipping in cenotes, the local wildlife at hotel and in streets - iguanas and coatis and deeeelicious Mexican food!

Safari would be awesome for children that age.

Fedupofballs · 25/02/2023 08:20

My 10 year old loved Bali and Lombok. Giant swings, jungle, snorkelling and surfing.

lilyfire · 25/02/2023 08:29

We went to Malaysia with children that age. Snorkeled with sharks and turtles and saw baby turtles hatching. Went to the jungle and then saw elephants and monkeys and we had some time in Kuala Lumpur which has amazing food.

I’d say Florida, especially the water parks at Disney.

LaFlottes · 25/02/2023 08:44

Boston - New York - Washington was a wonderful trip 😊

TinaYouFatLard · 25/02/2023 09:04

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I would do Florida with a week on a Caribbean cruise thrown in.

What were the costs for this like? Is it expensive?

My boys are 12 and 9, holidays we've got planned (only one physically, the rest are just mentally planned!) for the next 3-4 years ; Florida (universal and Disney), Italy (Rome, Naples and Sorrento), Disney Cruise/California theme parks and LA. Another on our list is a California road trip, perhaps hire an SUV.

New Zealand!
We went (via Bankok for 5 nights) when our kids were 3, 6 & 9. They were a bit young to be honest in terms of being able to remember it clearly (apart from the 9 year old) but we went for 6 weeks and was the best time to take them out of school (it was Nov/Dec). We travelled around in a motor home which was brilliant!

Yes the Yucatan peninsula is amazing, all this plus - Chichen Itza, Tulum ruins, Coba (ruins and monkeys), Xcaret, Xel-ha etc and Holbox Island. Just be aware of the sargassum.

So many possibilities, Thailand is wonderful, I'd love to go to Costa Rica. I'd probably give Sri Lanka a little longer before i went due to the problems there. I think you'll have a great time where ever you go.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 25/02/2023 19:55

My 2 loved Cornwall and the beach at that age. Still do tbh. We clearly have very different types of holiday Grin

Meandfour · 25/02/2023 19:57

I second Mexico. So much to do for dc that age, they’d love it!
