We’ve got two DD’s who will be (8 & 5) we’re looking at summer holidays for this summer. My partner likes the look of Naxo’s but I’m unsure if it’s a place for children or not?

Has anyone been & is it a place for children?

I went 20 years ago and it was nice but very quiet . we were island hopping on our way to Santorini.

I do know there’s no airport so will be a case of a ferry fermi either santorini or Athens. I have kids same age as you and in your shoes I’d pick an island with direct flights but nothing wrong with a ferry if you fancy an adventure! I’d choose Santorini over Naxos but I went to Santorini before it became very popular

Yes- have been a few times over the years and going again this summer! We love Naxos- beautiful old town, lovely beaches and very friendly. As PP said it is a bit more tricky to get to than an island with direct flights, but the plus side is that it doesn’t get crazy busy compared to some of the islands, and is generally cheaper. We generally get cheap easyJet flights to Mykonos and then ferry from there. DH and I first went pre children in the late 90s and I don’t feel it has actually changed that much…a good thing in my opinion 😀

It's a beautiful island. Loved it. In terms of it being child friendly, what are you looking for? It's probably not child-centric, but a lot of scope for family fun

Absolutely it would be suitable for children. Lots of beaches, fairly easy to access by ferry (suggest flight to mykonos or santorini and ferry from there).

Kavos Naxos hotel looks great as a child friendly place to stay but I imagine there are loads of apartments and other options.

We went to Naxos in summer 2021 and loved it. Agios Prokopios is a lovely area for families. We stayed at Birikos which is a very easy walk into town where you have a beautiful beach, shops and restaurants. Also on the bus route to Naxos town.

It’s a lovely island. Much more chilled than Santorini as it’s not as busy and doesn’t get the hoards of cruise ship tourists. So I’d actually say it’s probably better if you have kids - I found Santorini horribly busy.

Hi, we’re also looking at easyjet to mykonos, then Naxos for the main part of our holiday. Do you usually do just one night each way in Mykonos? We would rather maximise time on Naxos but slightly concerned about transport cancellations. Thanks

didldidi · 01/04/2023 20:29

Would agree about Agios prokopios, we were there last summer and it was lovely

Ishouldbeoutside · 01/04/2023 22:18

Which airports fly to Mykonos? It’s all the connections and trying to find direct flights that puts me off.

Justleaveitblankthen · 01/04/2023 22:28

A Place In The Sun featured Naxos a week or two ago.
It may still be available on catch up (channel4 or more4)

midsomermurderess · 02/04/2023 09:35

If it’s hard to find direct flights to Mykonos and then to travel on, you could fly to Athens and take a flight on from there.

squashyhat · 02/04/2023 09:48

Beware the ferry journey from Athens. If the sea is rough it's miserable.

Ishouldbeoutside · 03/04/2023 20:08

Santorini seems to be another option for the ferry. I get very sea sick!

Lbnc2021 · 03/04/2023 20:10

I went about 14 years ago, it’s my absolute favourite Greek island, I’d retire there if I could. It’s a bugger to get to tho!

Hobbesmanc · 04/04/2023 08:51

We stayed in aghios Anna. Very pretty. It's noticeably less touristy and still has a viable agricultural base. So food and fresh produce is amazing. Naxos town ticks the boxes. Cats, geraniums in pots. Tavernas.

We got the ferry from Piraeus as we visited Athens first. From memory it was six hours.

It's definitely a lovely Islam's but I think there are more options on some of the more accessible alternatives.

Tinks15 · 04/04/2023 12:02

Thanks everyone we’ve actually booked Crete now. DP still would love to visit Naxos but I’ve suggested maybe in a few years time and just the two of us.
