Weekend with friend inspiration - June

Hi all

Appreciate this is a bit how long is a piece of string - but am finally getting to go away with a friend without the kids in June.

Looking for inspiration where to go - both love culture, art but equally enjoy hiking/countryside. Looking for somewhere fairly relaxed. Think we’ve crossed off Northern Europe.

So either city break or somewhere where we can do easy walks. Don’t want to hire a car. Going for 3 nights. Would like warmth but not baking hot ( so not say Seville).

Both pretty week travelled so it’s a bit ridiculous can’t decide. Thinking somewhere maybe like Palma ( Mallorca) if a city ( could go back there but have both been several times)?

Any recs?

First consideration would be where are you travelling from? For a short break you don’t want a multi-stage journey. For example, I live in Scotland so would have limited direct options compared to someone living in the SE or perhaps Manchester etc. Can you access Eurostar?

Assuming travel is direct and convenient for you, for a break of that length I personally would pick Italy. Always beautiful, and you could pick the north so it’s not crushingly hot. Good train network makes it easy without a car. Years ago DH and I flew to northern Italy and explored. We loved Mantova, so I would enjoy a short break flying to Verona which allows a day trip to Mantova, plus access to Lake Garda too if you want to get out of urban areas.

Have a fabulous trip whatever you decide - sounds like a fun opportunity!

Berlin? Vienna?

I went with a friend to Vienna a few years ago and it was great - so much culture, History, coffee shops, easy to get around and easy enough from the airport to the centre of the city.

Thanks all.

Flights easy for me, more a restricted for my friend ( based in the north).

We did actually think of Verona, but the flights seemed limited to once a week unfortunately.

We were also thinking of Italy.

Berlin? Drive to Bruges?

Malaga is beautiful and wouldn't be too hot in May. Loads you see, good food and wine.

Loads to see

Malaga is a good idea - went there a very long time ago and enjoyed it.

Sorrento? The walk up to the top of Capri is a good one!

FettleOfKish · 18/02/2023 17:57

Jersey or Guernsey? Both have relaxed continental style towns, lots of history and miles of coastline / cliff paths to hike around.

Guernsey has sister islands to visit too, and connections with Renoir & Victor Hugo if they tick the culture / art boxes.

Funchal meets your needs perfectly. Amazing city, particularly old town, but into incredible levada walks in just minutes. Seriously underrated
