We have a week booked in Istanbul in Easter. Im a bit anxious now after reading about the building codes and risk of earthquakes. Would you still go?

I started a thread about this a week or so ago.
I'm due to go at Easter and getting the fear!
I think the general consensus was it was very unlikely to occur in Istanbul.
Does anyone else have any thoughts....

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 16/02/2023 18:48

Unlikely so soon after I mean!

play017 · 16/02/2023 18:49

Same here, we are going in Easter too!
I don't think we can claim on insurance so that's just money burned, but equally not sure if I would enjoy the holiday.

Same here 😥

Galadriel90 · 16/02/2023 18:51

Yes i would. It's at the other end of the country from the earthquake zone and Turkey is massive.

play017 · 16/02/2023 18:51

Ohh I was reading that there's a higher risk right after a big earthquake of aftershocks .. will try to find a link

I'm going there in mid April.
I'm still going.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 16/02/2023 18:53

I suppose it's the idea that this huge earthquake could trigger more along the plates. I'm not sure if this happens after large earthquakes's though!

Yes please if you could..

IntentionalError · 16/02/2023 18:55

Yes, absolutely. Turkey is an enormous country, much bigger than France, never mind the U.K. Istanbul is many hundreds of miles from the earthquake zone.

DuesToTheDirt · 16/02/2023 18:57

Yes, I'd go. It's the other end of the country from the earthquakes, and it's a big country!

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 16/02/2023 18:58

I've read that Istanbul is due a large earthquake.
Is it more likely to happen now after this huge earthquake in the same land mass?

HermioneWeasley · 16/02/2023 20:08

Does nobody understand the basics of plate tectonics? The earthquake happened because two plates shifted over each other. Istanbul is hundreds of miles from the fault line. You’ll be fine.

Lcb123 · 16/02/2023 20:09

I’d go. Contribute to their economy!

Delectable · 16/02/2023 20:21

There was one or maybe two light tremors when we visited a couple of years ago. I didn't feel them. During dinner at a Turkish restaurant just now I was asking my DH when we'll visit this year. I loved Turkey and will visit if I already had plans to.

Thank you Hermione. This is reassuring!

To be fair earthquakes happen all over Turkey as it sits between three plates (Eurasian, African and Arabian). But OP the chances of further plate slips in the next few months are very unlikely, obviously no one can say for certain because our planet is really quite unstable...but realistically you've more chance of winning the lottery than being hit by a quake on you holiday.
Istanbul is an incredible city, enjoy your break and the Turkish bathsSmile.

Thank you for the reassurance!

FannyChmelar · 17/02/2023 07:59

A week? I’ve been there twice - you really wouldn’t want to go for more than 2 nights.

HermioneWeasley · 17/02/2023 12:45

Really @FannyChmelar? Topkapi palace is a day on its own

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 17/02/2023 16:12

Absolutely. We are going to Turkey in a few months.
