planning to go in September for 3 weeks . Start Tokyo, down to Kyoto and Nara, over to Shikoku and Kyushu, want to do one Shinkansen….but happy enough with normal trains otherwise. Any hints of tips. Is the pass worth it?

The pass is more than worth it. It almost pays for itself in just the journey from Tokyo to Kyoto. I got the 7 day one though. Are you going to get the 14 day?

Take a look at www.japan-guide.com/railpass/ to get an idea whether the pass pays off for the journeys you want to do - you can get 7/14/21 day passes but they are not always the cheapest option.

We worked out that the pass was cheaper for the yrips we wanted to do. We bought them in line from Japan Centre which at the time was the cheapest but that was back Iin 2018

Pass is absolutely worth it.

Going those distances you will definitely want to be on the shinkansen and not the regular trains. Also bear in mind that you need to book your journeys on the shinkansen - can be done on the day but for longer planned trips it isn’t worth risking it and is better to do at least the day before.

I’m maybe considering going around this time @BarrelOfOtters what kind of accommodation are you booking?
