Rules about UK Passports and going to Spain after Brexit

I have a passport that was issued in August 2013. The expiry date on it is May 2024 because I had unused months on my old passport and these were added on.

The rules after Brexit say that the passport can only be valid for 10 years from date of issue, and that there should be 3 months left on it by the date of return.

So can I go to Spain in July for 2 weeks on my current passport? It will have been issued less than 10 years ago (Aug 13) at the date of travel, but I am not sure if I meet the 3 month rule about coming back and whether the months on my passport up to May 24 count anymore.

I have looked on google but the sites that let you check ask you to input your expiry date so they don't take into account that a passport can be valid for more than 10 years.

Any advice/experience of this much appreciated.

No, not on the information you've supplied. It runs out in August, so the latest you can go is May.

Are you sure it's not 6 months left that's the norm

By my reckoning it should be OK as on your date of travel it will still be valid as the expiry would be taken as August 2023. Then when you are leaving there will still be at least 3 months remaining until the printed expiry date.

Your passport must be:

• issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

No its 3 months for Europe

Although some airlines have wrongly stopped people from travelling over confusion with passport expiry dates so might be better to renew anyway

although, it’s only Feb, so plenty of time to renew beforehand.

Someone I know thought her passport was okay and was turned away at the airport. She had to let her husband and son go on their own. She spent a sleepless night and had to queue up at a passport office couple of mornings later in order to get another flight. So it might be okay but why worry about it. Just renew and you can relax.

My Passport was issued on 13 Feb 2013 ( so 10 years old on 13 Feb 23) and expires Nov 23 as I also had extra months added . I travelled to France with Jet 2 in January with no problems. I won't be able to use it again now as it will have been issued more than 10 years ago.

Based on your dates you should be fine. Some airlines were confused last year but the guidance on the gov.uk website is clear . Your airline website is also likely to have a section on this.
