Northern Cyprus in January?

Looking to escape the cold of Eastern Turkey (where we are presently living) in January, also a big public holiday when everything will effectively shut down for a week! (Think we will murder each other if we stay here!)
Northern Cyprus would be our nearest cheapest option. Have searched the archives but can't find anything so wondered if anyone has info on temp. and nice hotels/apartments and where to stay?
We will be with dd (4yrs) and ds (6mths)

don't think it is ethical to holiday in n cyprus personally.

although if you are living in turkey perhaps you don't agree

Living here I try not to get involved in politics, but yes, point taken!

go to egypt instead?!

moondog · 05/12/2004 23:16

Yes, been discussing it with dh. We are now discussing Egypt or Dubai, but a bit worried that they may be soulless.
However, we want a few days uncomplicated sun and fun with the kids so are not trying to be too ambitious.
Will trawl through the archives but in the meantime, would anyone recommend nice places around the Sinai Peninsula or in Dubai. We don't want to rough it, need a bit of luxury at this time of my life!
Also, anyone know if it is warm enough to swim in the sea/outdoor pools then at this time of year?
Thank you in anticipation!

egypt not soulless, fascinating! january not brilliant weather-wise, but similar to/better than n cyprus. dubai weather pretty much perfect then, but yes, soulless. but for a week of sun and pool it is fine. stayed in the ritz-carlton which is the nicest place (low rise, lovely gardens, and civilised - also wonderful kids pool and facilities while still being grown-up) - most of the others are not so nice but perfectly OK.

Thanks princess! I saw your other stuff from way back and refs. to Ritz-Carlton, but I'm worried now about this building work I hear of.

God no, of course I don't think that Egypt would be soulless, rather was referring tentatively to the manmade resorts therein. From what you say, sounds a bit chilly this time of year.

I want somewhere nice but as this is not a dream holiday (rather a temp. escape from an unavoidable situation at home)I am not going to spend days researching it.

Dh home from work now so will check out the Ritz Carlton.
( I asked on another thread about the Dubai Marine B
Beach Club. Web site looks fab, but Time Out say the rooms are 'tired' so that is bothering me.
Have had a hell of a year with one thing and another and feel about 90!!Just want to take it eaaaaaaassssy with no hassles!)

building work not noticeable from the hotel (prone position, by pool)!

whole of dubai is one big bizarre building site though.

stay in the r-c garden and you'll be OK though.

what about morocco? still cold though. south africa? prob not too accessible from turkey. hmmm, thinking aloud here. VERY nice hotels in Oman, and a real live place with history and culture, unlike dubai, how about that?

moondog · 06/12/2004 22:55

Yeah we 'did' Morocco a couple of years ago and it was truly lovely. Would really recommend it to anyone.
Think I might go for the Dubai option if only to try a 'cultureless' holiday. Don't feel too guilty as I am surrounded by culture here on the old Silk Route!
(My thirst for 'culture' is a bit of a joke-after a summer working in the States as a student, I went off to studiously get acquainted with the Martin Luther King story, the Trail of Tears and the history and background of Slavery while everyone else scarpered to the beach!)

I think I will let myself off just this once...

Many thanks for your help!
