Krakow

I've just booked Krakow for 4 nights in April. Just me and my fiance.

Any suggestions for things to do? Good restaurants and bars?

Also, we'd like to visit Auschwitz. Is this better as an tour from Krakow? Has anyone made their own way there and then joined a tour?

Wieliczka salt mines

Rynek underground museum

St Mary’s Basilica

Wawel Castle

The Barbican, Florian’s Gate and the city walls
Czartoryski Museum

Schindler Museum and MOCAK

Jewish Quarter and Ghetto Heroes Square
Magia Cafe

Cytat Cafe

Camelot

Morksie Oko (the restaurant, not the lake!)

To the above I’d add:
Hamsa in the Jewish quarter for lunch
Galician Jewish museum
Pod Aniolami for dinner

Salt mines and the prison camps are best done with a proper guide.

AnyFucker · 06/02/2023 19:30

Auschwitz and the salt mines are quite a distance from Krakow (about 45-60 mins drive)

We did it with a mini coach tour and guide. It was actually really good value for money.

Squiffy01 · 06/02/2023 19:32

We just caught a local bus to the camp and walked around ourselves I quite liked going at our own pace and not rushing.

Chunkymonkey123 · 06/02/2023 19:34

We got the coach ourselves to both auschwitz and the salt mines and then just joined a tour there. The restaurants in the main square are ok but touristy, we used trip advisor and found some lovely places to eat.

Same here as @Chunkymonkey123

buses are cheap but a little complicated as I remember…

the main square is expensive BUT have a drink there and watch the world go by and eat off the beaten track - we got five courses for three and drinks for about £30!

was fab

Buses are unfortunately complicated even for Poles (not familiar with the area)

@teraculum29

that makes me feel better!
was a bit mad - like others have said , I still prefer to do my - well our- own thing. Do the same whenever we can wherever we are. Part of the fun.

we have been trying to decide where to go for Easter hols- hubby just said ‘what about krakow again?’

AnyFucker · 06/02/2023 22:32

If you liked Krakow, what about Prague ?

earsup · 06/02/2023 22:53

We went in summer, was lovely trip, went over the bridge to the shindler museum etc and walked out further to some old areas with some old buildings. if you see building with plaques on and a number, in old jewish area, it is because they are unclaimed and waiting for some one to turn up....probably wont happen. we didnt go to the camps...and did find the touts a bit happy clappy trying to flog tickets to such a grim place..we actually preferred Wroclaw as its a mini krakow without the tourists !

Mumstheword2022 · 08/02/2023 20:36

@AnyFucker

you won’t believe it but we are going to Prague this summer!

not done Wrocław but have heard suoer things; a few say even nicer than krakow

Isseywith3witchycats · 09/02/2023 18:36

we did austwich from the bus station theres a bus that goes straight there it was easy and got to see some of the countryside on the way and we found going round on our own was good took it at our own pace rather than follow round like gawpy sheep

Susiesue61 · 12/02/2023 19:18

I’ve just been with 21 year old DD. Absolutely beautiful, especially the day it snowed 😊 We went to the castle and a few places she’s seen recommended on Tiktok! We took a guided bus tour to Auschwitz which was grimly fascinating. We didn’t fit much else in other than a few drinks in the main square, they have outside spaces with heaters
