Ryan Air baggage allowance

I've not flown with Ryan Air for a long time and now realise you cant take the usual cabin bag without paying extra.

Has anyone travelled with just the smaller bag 40 x 20 x 25 and could you squeeze in enough for 3 nights away?

DD did Barcelona for 4 nights with this. Wore jacket and trainers for flight and took 5 dresses, a skirt, 2 tops and 2 pairs of sandals, make up bag, iPad, underwear, a bikini.

Yes absolutely have done a week with hand luggage

This sounds promising. Don't suppose you know where she got the bag from ?

Yes. I pretty much wore everything I planned on wearing in three days in laters with pjs, pants, socks and a few toiletries in my bag.

honeypancake · 04/02/2023 10:26

Yes you can but you would have to carry a heavy backpack/bag even if you think you have packed light. I did once and then suffered from pain in the back on my holiday - no thanks.

Morph22010 · 04/02/2023 10:28

My brother made my mum do it recently when they were going on a 3 day visit. The bag you are allowed to take is tiny, much smaller than usual cabin. They didn’t bring toiletries etc just bought those where they were going and my brother who travels light anyway allowed my mum some space in his bag.

You won’t be carrying a heavy backpack if you only take cabin baggage on Ryan air as the size allowed free is much smaller than on other airlines, unless you fill it with lead the size of bag allowed you couldn’t get enough in to make it heavy

Simonjt · 04/02/2023 10:31

We manage okay when we go to Sweden, clothes for one fit in the free size fine, they only time people may struggle is if they choose to take a second pair of shoes.

Are you sure this is not the normal 10 kg carry on bag? The only bag you can take on free with Ryan Air is a small rucksack size. I'm amazed someone could get all that in .

IrritableVowel · 04/02/2023 10:35

It has to fit under seat in front. We have done it for 1 night, but don't think we'd manage more than that. Your handbag has to fit into that bag too.

I’ve done a week with hand luggage only but Ryan air hand luggage is now much smaller, I would able to do 3 nights in it even. Did you do your week on Ryan air hand luggage size, if so did you wear same clothes all week?

WithIcePlease · 04/02/2023 10:36

It was just a smallish Nike rucksack that was within dimensions- nothing special

PAFMO · 04/02/2023 10:38

There's the cabin baggage of 10kg which can be a wheeled trolley, and then there's the small bag that is included in any booking.

You can do it I reckon. But you'd probably end up buying your toiletries there so you might as well pay for a 10kg bag.

PAFMO · 04/02/2023 10:39

I mean, obvs, the 2 price points for cabin baggage - the 10kg that you pay for, the small bag you don't.

maddy68 · 04/02/2023 10:40

I use that bag size and I usually go for a week. Roll small. Do t forget the cheeky hack that you are allowed a carrier bag as well for duty free!

WithIcePlease · 04/02/2023 10:40

@shinynewapple22 - yes that size. It was a small backpack and her clothes were thin and she's a small size. She didn't take shampoo or conditioner but did take a small antiperspirant

Morph22010 · 04/02/2023 10:41

I’m wondering if the people saying it’s easy actually realise how small the bag you are allowed to take free is now, not sure when it changed but I didn’t realise it had changed till my mum and brother went in December, my mums bag thst fit the dimensions was tiny, no way could have fit thr stuff people are saying they’ve fit into hand luggage.

Boopear · 04/02/2023 10:42

I managed this a few weeks ago..3 nights. I even had space for a book! Didnt take a change of shoes, v basic toiletries/makeup and one pair of trousers/2 tops/underwear. Layered up in plane. If you can cope with one pair of shoes (or v good at packing another pair) its a doer.. I just used a small day rucksack.

Abraxan · 04/02/2023 10:44

We have done it before for 3-4 nights and about to do it again over half term for 3 nights.

We bought cheap cabin bags which are the exact right dimensions to maximise space.

We take travel size toiletries we can all use / so unscented anti-perspirant spray, mini toothpaste, etc and stay in a hotel which provides shampoo, etc.

we use packing cubes which have a vacuum effect when rolled. Underwear, spare tops, Pjs, and we wear the thickest clothes/coats. If room I'll add a second pair of bottoms/skirt. We take shared chargers.

All of the admin type stuff is on our phones. Passports in pockets.

We haven't done it for holidays we've needed to have dressed up clothes for. So it's mainly t shirts or casual dresses, and same trainers for each day.

youngestsister · 04/02/2023 10:44

Yes, I had a small/medium size rucksack, with 3 dresses, sandals, underwear for 3 nights. Wore my jacket & trainers on flights, bought toiletries & used hotel ones. Only issue was the flights (to Barcelona) were freezing so a hoodie or cardigan would have been useful.

Wasn't heavy to carry at all.

WithIcePlease · 04/02/2023 10:46

Yes allowable size is small. We had to look carefully for one within the limits. Even her standard fjallraven that she used for school was too big 😳

whytesnow · 04/02/2023 10:48

Have you heard of the Ryanair hack on TikTok they were a bodywarmer with loads of pockets and fill them right up wins every time

To be fair it changed a while ago and has been the small size for ages now.
It's very doable if you are flexible and don't need going out/work/formal stuff there.

I don't think you can take a handbag as well / it has to fit in the same bag. Or at least not be seen. A small crossbody bag big enough for phone and wallet under your coat won't be seen so there are some ways round it.

Check on the rules for duty free bags: the didn't used to let you take them on as extra - had to fit in the same one piece of small luggage.

MargaritaRita · 04/02/2023 10:49

Depends on the airport I suppose, but they do not seem to measure or weigh the small add on bag anymore, or the overhead bags either unless they are the size of an elephant. If it's a backpack it really only needs to fit under your seat and you will be fine.

I only bring an overhead if going away for a week or more. Other than that a backpack is ideal. I have a cabin max Evos which is brilliant. It fits loads and has wheels, and goes under the seat. I put it on my back when boarding. The dimensions are slightly out of RY range but it fits under the seat and that's all that seems to matter these days. I have a fabric cross body bag that fits passport, cards, etc. and it goes under your coat/jacket. Does for nighttime too as it is black with little gold zips.

Subtlety is the key. If it looks like an elephant it probably is.
