Ryan Air baggage allowance

I've not flown with Ryan Air for a long time and now realise you cant take the usual cabin bag without paying extra.

Has anyone travelled with just the smaller bag 40 x 20 x 25 and could you squeeze in enough for 3 nights away?

I’ve travelled for 4-5 days with just this size bag. Big enough for clothes & underwear, not shoes. I take miniature toiletries, put them in a duty free bag with my paperback & iPad. I got my bag from Wilkinsons, but don’t think that it’s in stock at the moment.

I like the bag and the price!

Always travel RA and I travel a lot . Can easily fit 3 days worth of clothes under the seat in front . In fact just back from a week skiing and fitted in all the clothes for the week . We have a check in bag with the ski gear though.

The size has NEVER been checked. It's just meant to fit under the seat . I had quite a decent size rucksack the last few times.

My husband went to Dublin for 3 nights with Ryanair - took 2 pairs of jeans, 2 shirts and a spare jumper, wore his coat on the plane and didn’t take another pair of shoes. He took travel sized toiletries and was fine and had room to spare! Make sure you roll your clothes and you’ll have space!

I do this all the time for short 3 or 4 day trips, you can squash items in and of course wear extra jacket or coat and put items in the pockets, toiletries etc can go there...Primark does a small back pack bag for either 8 or 10 quid...its beige or black colour, its a fraction smaller than the allowed bag.

I’d say that would be tight ..
Easyjet ; 45 x 36 x 20 - up to 15 kg no extra handbag although you can bring a duty free bag - doable
Ryanair ; 40 x 25 x 20 - 60% of Easyjet .. I think that would be a challenge for a week

Be very careful, I travelled last weekend with Ryanair and they were getting everyone in the non priority lane to put their bags in the sizer, we saw around 15 people get charged for it being oversized. (And it didn't look like they were taking the piss)

Take old underwear/t-shirts and ditch at your destination if you want to bring souvenirs back. Buy travel sized toiletries in duty free and stuff coat in the duty free bag if you're getting too hot in the airport. I normally carry a lightweight shopping bag to put duty free/coat in and that has never been an issue.

Which airport was that ? It absolutely would be my luck to get caught out.

@userxx it was Barcelona

MissAmbrosia · 04/02/2023 20:28

Dd just went to Milan for 4 nights with a small rucksack - and a cross body bag under her coat. There were laundry facilities at her hostel but I think she managed. To be fair - we do a lot of weekend breaks and I always pay for the priority boarding and carry on luggage though.

VikingsandDragons · 04/02/2023 21:30

Yes, we fly often so have 'cabin max' backpacks which are the exact maximum dimensions allowed on ryanair, if you were taking large items like a pair of boots or a couple of jumpers I wouldn't fancy it, but choosing thinner fabrics or smaller garments (leggings not jeans, wearing the jumper and packing the cardigan etc) we've done a week away on the smaller bag without hassle.

I bought a bag from Amazon which was the exact Ryanair size. It was a squeeze for 3 nights in Berlin this winter but I managed! I wore my coat and stuffed the pockets with things. I wore all the heavy stuff like boots, jeans and a big jumper, and just packed light stuff. Nobody checked the size though, I probably could’ve got away with a slightly bigger one…

ItsCurtainstothat · 05/02/2023 05:12

I stressed about this when travelling with them in the summer. I measured religiously and couldn’t find any bag that fitted the measurements. In the end I took a soft bag that could be squashed down. No one even looked at them or checked either way. I was fuming.

Get these for your liquids. Do the job. Don't weigh much or take up much space

Yes! I am just back from Germany & I brought a rucksack as my 'handbag' to go under the seat in front.
I'm a v good packer & in it I had:
1 pair cropped black trousers
1 pair black tapered trousers
1 cashmere polo neck
1 cashmere v neck cardigan
1 shirt
1 black silky vest
1 black Jersey vest
Knickers x 5
Socks
Cashmere hat
Cashmere gloves
Makeup (non liquid)
Small umbrella
Charger for phone & adaptor
Hairbrush
Freezer bag of travel size toiletries
Pair of suede Chelsea boots

I also had a v small cross body handbag which had glasses, back cards, phone , passport, cash. I had this on under my puffa jacket & the rucksack on my back & was perfectly comfortable & no one batted an eyelid

I bought a Karrimor brand bag that functions as a tote bag as well as a rucksack & it was a fantastic investment

Before this I travelled to London by plane last Feb with only a leather Ally Capellini tote bag & managed to pack enough for 4 days in there too 😀

Fenella123 · 05/02/2023 14:48

Yes, a Max Manhattan backpack using compression cubes. And coat had three pockets which didn't hurt ;) Nearly a week away.

userxx · 05/02/2023 14:51

Excellent. Thanks everyone, it's been a massive help.
