California - family of 5

Looking to go to California for 2weeks in August. I've been several times & remember lots of motels/hotels had 2 double beds. However my trips were pre-kids. Has anyone been as a family of 5? Is it difficult to find affordable accomodation?

We are planning a trip this summer too with 3 teenagers age 13, 15 and 16. I tried googling family rooms for 5 in California. A few came up but many were actually for 2 rooms or a suite which made them really expensive. We are now thinking of basing ourselves in a rental property for a few nights rather that hotels for a night at a time. Let's hope someone else turns up with some top tips. Do you have an itinerary yet? We want to do San Francisco,, Carmel Monterey, whale watching hoping to get to Lake Tahoe too. Not bothered with LA particularly.
