4k for a holiday

We have just been left some money and have to not be sensible with all of it. We have about £4000 budget for a family of 4 (two teen girls) for a holiday. We want to go abroad after several years of travelling round UK. We want at least a week and we need to be flying from Scotland really. Dh isn't much of a fan of lying on a beach doing very little. He likes being out and about discovering places, doing stuff.
Where would you go?

Favourite cities I've been to were Rome and New Orleans. Favourite country was probably Jordan and next holiday I do will probably be Route 66.

Venice was nice, so a mini tour of Italy would be great or a cruise around the Adriatic which was good.

Rome
Barcelona
Valencia
Cadiz

Jordan. Best one-week holiday I've ever been on.
Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea - all world class sites and only an hour from Aqaba. There'll also be sun for everyone else who might appreciate it, even if DH doesn't.

Europe, fly to Geneva for few nights, rent a car and do northern Italy.

HeddaGarbled · 29/01/2023 00:03

The girls would probably like a bit of beach/pool time, though? I’d be thinking about somewhere where you could have some lazy beach/pool days but with cultural sites nearby.

It will probably have to be Europe on that budget. I’d think of a cultural attraction you’d all really like to visit, and then find a resort nearby.

We really enjoyed Sorrento for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri and the Amalfi coast.

This. Jordan was the most amazing place I've been.

Interailing around Europe or maybe a cruise.

Excellent choice 👌

Another vote for Jordan. It will blow your mind.

XelaM · 29/01/2023 08:15

Wow I lived in Israel as a child and always had a memory of Jordan as quite impoverished and barren compared to Israel. But this was over 25 years ago.

NomadicSoul · 29/01/2023 08:34

I've been to Jordan and Israel, both about 20 years ago. The dead sea was disgusting (it was an open sewer really), but the rest of Jordan was amazing. I went to Jerash and a crusader castle and around Aman as well. The people were about the most friendly I've ever met.

Israel I didn't feel safe in despite or maybe because of all the soldiers. Our party also had pick pocket attempts while there and the poverty in the Palestinian areas was very striking.

Of the two, I much preferred Jordan.

Croatia has everything. Beaches, pools, adventure sports, cities, hiking, sun.

brewtastic · 29/01/2023 08:41

Sorrento..

Luxurious for adults and teens.
Swimming pools in nice hotels
Sea views everywhere (but not much beach)
Great shopping
Boat trips
Tours and trips
Amazing food & drink
Visit the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii, etc.

It's a breathtaking place ❤️

Mammyloveswine · 29/01/2023 13:25

Ooh lake Garda in Italy!

Fairysilver · 29/01/2023 13:36

How about a cruise?
I found it worked well for teens. A full day out in different cities every day while having all the luxury of a five star hotel and pool if desired. Entertainment day and night if you want it.

4thonthe4th · 29/01/2023 13:39

Croatia!

PinkPondQueen · 29/01/2023 14:47

Switzerland. Fly to Zurich or Geneva then get the train to Grindelwald. Absolutely beautiful and plenty to see and do. Cable cars, funiculars, ziplining.

Provence/Cote d'Azur. Lots to see and do. Renting a boat or canoes at the Gorge du Verdon is an absolute must-do.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/01/2023 16:13

What do you like though OP? It shouldn’t be all what the DH likes.

DoorstoManual · 29/01/2023 16:16

Why is 25% of the group dictating the holiday you have,🙄 if the other 75% want a lying around holiday, then surely he can keep himself amused by going off exploring.

itsnote · 29/01/2023 16:18

What do you like to do?

Lake Garda would be my suggestion or one of the Canary Islands 🇮🇨

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 29/01/2023 16:40

Slovenia. Mountains, lakes, beaches, cities, lovely warm climate and compact so you can see everything. Stunning scenery everywhere, very safe, accessible and affordable.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 29/01/2023 16:43

Barcelona is great if you want a bit of beach time and sight seeing.
You'd need to go out if peak season with a budget £4000 but it's still warm enough to go to the beach in October.
