The one I was recommended has had bad reviews recently, the Principal.
I want to walk the walls, is there any closed parts at the moment ?
And can you climb up the Minster ?

Had a great stay at Hotel du Vin about 5 years ago. Yes, we climbed the Minster.

The walls can ne closed when it's icy on the ground, they were a couple of times last week . Have you looked at The Grand or Malmaison?

bellsbuss · 28/01/2023 14:36

The Grand is amazing

mum2three48 · 28/01/2023 14:52

The Churchill hotel is lovely

Stayed at the Grand in October. Huge rooms, lovely breakfast, and afternoon tea. great location too.

We like the Novotel because it has a pool. It's right opposite the walls on Fishergate. There is a fantastic sourdough bakery a few doors up.

GradNonFashinista · 28/01/2023 15:50

The Grand is lovely

Agreed, nice rooms, car parking and an easy walk into the centre of York.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 28/01/2023 15:54

Another vote for the novotel. Not as grand as some others but it's quieter and there's a pool. Lovely breakfast and nice bar, minimalist decor and no fuss or staff trying to sell you extras.

Also right near a wetherspoon if I remember rightly which was a win for us 🤣 depends what you're after tho as it wouldn't suit everyone! X

We stayed at malmaison a year ago and it was lovely. Close to the train station and walls. It also has an absolutely stunning sky bar at the top that you should book into whether you're staying there or not!

Sucessinthenewyear · 28/01/2023 16:06

I preferred Churchill over Hotel du vin but they are both good.

whataboutnow · 28/01/2023 16:14

If you want something really different have a look at the Hocus Pocus Tiny Hotel .

FTM2022SS · 28/01/2023 16:15

Also came on to say The Churchill haha!

I like the Hilton by the castle; good breakfast, short walk in and cheap over night parking in the car park opposite (although not cheap if leaving during the day!) Holiday Inn is a good cheaper alternative, slightly longer walk in but still pretty central. Don't recommend the Doubletree, really strange layout and luck of the draw as to what room type you get.

Tequilamockinbird · 28/01/2023 16:43

We usually stay in the Hilton York and love it there. We always get one of the rooms with Juliet balcony overlooking Clifford's Tower though, so not sure what the regular rooms are like.

allmycats · 28/01/2023 16:57

Greys Court is fantastic and it has direct access to the walls from its garden. It is a very individual lovely boutique style but the building itself is a very ancient and nationally important building. Look at it online.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 28/01/2023 17:19

The Hilton at Clifford's tower is fab

Agree - I had a training event at work there last year and thought it was a gem.

We stayed in The Principal during one of the bits of covid when such a thing was allowed and it was fine, if a bit sterile because they’d had to remove all the ‘extras’ like scatter cushions and decorative bits from the rooms.

We went for a family big birthday and our first choice would have been Greys Court as mentioned above, but it’s not really suited to small children.

EdwardianDream · 28/01/2023 17:25

Can see the Churchill has been recommended already, it's really lovely! We stayed there for the first part of our honeymoon ☺️

Mammyloveswine · 28/01/2023 17:26
