Hi, thinking of going to Greece for a week in May with two friends. Any recommendations of where to go / things to do. Travelling on a budget, and more interested in the history, attractions etc than the beach! Thanks.

It's got to be Athens !
I went too long ago to recommend hotels, but there are plenty of options.
The whole place is full of history & attractions, & there's a train to the coast if you do feel the need for a beach.

You could try Nafplio in the Peloponnese. It’s a coach ride away from Athens, so potentially less expensive flights than the islands. Absolutely dripping in fascinating history!

Look up all the fantastic historical sites in Greece. There is a choice of airports so you can look for good flights.

Rhodes or Crete for the old towns, old ruins/history, great scenery and good food. Both big enough for lots to do and also for smaller nicer resorts.

I just watched a Susan Calman programme where she visited Athens - the Acropolis was absolutely rammed - unbelievable

If you go up the acropolis first thing it really isn't so busy. We went for about 8.30am and honestly it was fine. The walk back down was actually quite peaceful (but very hot)

Thanks guys, definitely want to stay in Athens for a few days, any recommendations for how long we should stay there, best things you did there? And then going somewhere else for 2/3 days, should we stay on the mainland or go to one of the islands, would it be worth it?

Kefalonia is beautiful, so green compared to many of the islands.

Decades since I've been there but...Cape Sounion is doable as a day trip from Athens. The island of Aegina/Egina is quite easy to get to from Athens, for a change of scene, and from there you could have a day trip to the islands of Poros and Hydra. In Athens itself, a trip up Mount Lycabettus (highest point in the city) is worth doing.

Cape sounion us very different to how it was decades ago sadly. It used to be quite wild but big hotels now.
