Sorrento or Sicily

Planning a trip in June for my birthday with my partner, can't decide between a short break to Sorrento or Sicily? I like restaurants, pretty views and some exploring. Has anyone been to both and which did you prefer?

I've done both - enjoyed Sicily more. Seemed less busy but we did go in October time. Saying that some parts were maybe a bit too quiet if you wanted to go out to eat each evening, I'd stay in Taormina if we went again probably

Sorrento is lovely and a great town to walk around, not far to Pompeii and so on, but less of a relaxing holiday. Better restaurants.

Trip up Etna was more exiting than Vesuvius and seemed less touristy.

Amalfi coast lovely but would go for Amalfi itself, Positano or Ravello. Sorrento good place to day trip Capri but wouldn’t stay there.

sicily is delightful, Taormina lovely and make sure you watch S2 of White Lotus if you do go!

@ItchyKondera Etna defo wins over Vesuvius, though Pompeii/Herculaneum are great on mainland 👍

Don’t miss Path Of The Gods walk if on Amalfi coast too @lulla12345

Sorrento is lovely and grin there you can take a boat trip to Capri.
I live Sicily too but Sorrento is better

yes that is true. Herculaneum was very interesting. We did Pompeii with a rubbish tour guide so would like to go back and explore more. There is also one day a month I believe which is free for schools or locals or something, and guess which day we went ;) packed!

Ravello is the most beautiful place.

@Chippy1234 it really is 😍

The White Lotus S2 is making me want to go to Sicily sooo badly!! I bet they've seen an increase in tourism since the series aired.

Emmamoo89 · 26/01/2023 13:46

I've done both. Prefer Sicily x

lulla12345 · 26/01/2023 13:48

Thanks so much everyone!

Those little yellow buses taking you down to Amalfi and those views.. the photos just don’t do it justice. There are plenty of restaurants up in Ravello for the evening and when the day crowds go it’s a magical place.

Capri is nice too. We had an apartment for a week and once the day trippers went it was lovely. Very glamorous.

Same - I think Sicily may get busier!!

ChatSamosa · 26/01/2023 13:52

I preferred Sicily. The north coast around Palermo and Cefalu. I did do a full drive around the island over 3 weeks.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/01/2023 13:52

Sicily is a fabulous holiday destination but is quite big and there is loads to see... if you are only there for a long weekend you might not cover much of the ground.
Sorrento is a fantastic place for access to the Amalfi coast proper ie Ravello, Positano, Amalfi . The ferry runs to Capri and you can easily visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Naples, even Salerno is not too far.It is a good place from which to take day trips and is pretty enough but blander and ,to me less interesting than the other resorts and cities.

trieditbuyedit · 26/01/2023 13:52

I lived in Sicily. I would choose Sorrento 😆

MaggieMagpie357 · 26/01/2023 13:54

@LSSG and more expensive 😢

BitOutOfPractice · 26/01/2023 13:57

Sicily. Sorrento is so so busy. Crowded. Overpriced. If you must go the Amalfi coast there are much nicer places.

Getamoveon36 · 26/01/2023 14:04

Throwing a curveball in…..anyone been to Cinque Terra area, seems like an interesting alternative to Amalfi Coast…?

ohdizzy · 26/01/2023 14:10

I've done both and preferred Sorrento.

I second that!

I went to Sorrento in October a few years ago. It was lovely and warm and missed the summer crowds. It was a great base for exploring the rest of the Amalfi coast. If you do go, there is a little restaurant called Meating that does the best fillet steak you'll ever find.

Knoblauch · 26/01/2023 14:19

I can really really recommend the hotel we stayed at as well. Beautiful!

I've been to and for me it's an odd thing to try and compare; Sorrento is a town and Sicily is a large island. Where abouts in Sicily where you thinking of?

PinkPondQueen · 26/01/2023 20:00

Yeah I agree, where in Sicily were you thinking? I love both places and am doing both again this year! The Amalfi Coast is absolutely stunning though and may be better for a shorter break as the distances between sights are smaller.
