looking for a special holiday - 3 children, where to go?

We usually go in the UK on hol, but think we may push the boat out next year (school hols) and do something special. Children will be 14,9 and 7. The travel agent priced me up a hol in dominican, her suggestion, which for school hols, all inc was (eek) £5000 plus. She said 'it's lovely, a resort in itself, you don't need to leave the holiday park'.
BUT why would you pay that money to go there, and not move! A beach and blue sky, a kids disco are the same at any med holiday resort!
There must be somewhere to go that would give me more for my money (I don't mean that i would be sightseeing all the time, but I do like a wander).
Any suggestions would be lovely please! Thanks

I had no idea budget - last abroad hol cost 2.5k to majorca, so knew it would be more than that...
I was just walking past travel agents and nipped in for a book, and ended up having a chat, and the 'village' was what she said would be brilliant.
She also suggested Egypt, and Turkey (not Carribean, but she said was very nice).
I was hoping someone would spot my thread and say 'well xxxxxx would be a lovely destination, very scenic, places to walk, with something at night for the kids'. We went to kemya for our Honeymoon, and that was lovely, but of course can't do that now.

eg we are off to Tobago for less than £2000 for all of us soon. Don't book through travel agents is the key I think

I wouldn't go to the Dominican-you could be anywhere. I think CountessDracula is right. Much cheaper to book it yourself. Look at xl.com for cheap flights to the caribbean and maybe someone on here could recommend accom for you?

Thailand, Malaysia or Bali would be my choice. Agree with CD - book it yourself, not travel agent.

I also agree with you that Dominican could be anywhere, and not any different. Need to go somewhere that feels and looks very different and special (but not madly expensive!).

You mentioned Egypt, have been many times.
Have you thought about a Red Sea Resort, somewhere like Sharm el Sheikh maybe? There are usually some good deals to be had.

Egypt was also somewhere that the travel agent mentioned, am going to have a look at that.
