Crete

Thinking about a family holiday to Crete for May half term. It would be a do it yourself trip (would book flights, hire car and a self catering villa/apartment).

Would like a place in walking distance to a few cafes and restaurants. Even better if walking distance to a sandy beach (3 children 13, 12 and 8). Access to a pool would be great.

Would like to be able to take a short drive to some more hidden beaches and historical places of interest whilst there.

Does anyone have recommendations of areas or accommodation they have enjoyed?

All the travel advice is to book a package so you are covered/ have support in case of strikes and cancellations. that said, we love Crete and you would be best off going to the East of the island so you can visit Knossos.

Aaah yes good point, thanks. Hadn't considered that benefit. I suppose I was keen to avoid the all inclusive larger holiday parks and would like to have a car so we can explore a bit more independently but I suppose we could still find a package that fits...

Panormos has a sandy child friendly beach and is a nice small town with tavernas. you could look for something there if that appeals. It’s also half way between Heraklion and Chania so good for visiting both.

Chania is lovely
I would stick booking yourself, you can get exactly what you want and it often works out cheaper. As long as you have insurance you can still claim.
