Holiday in UK

I live in Ireland and would like to bring the kids for a holiday somewhere in UK. Will be myself and 2 kids. I was originally thinking London but prices are so expensive for hotels. I was thinking maybe flying into Stanstead or Gatwick. What area is easy access to airport but maybe a day trip to London too?

Brighton would be a good option. It’s got lots to do and trains from Brighton into the centre of London take about an hour.
Here’s the Gatwick Express timetable to Brighton www.gatwickexpress.com/journey/gatwick-airport-to-brighton It takes about half an hour.

Both Stanstead and Gatwick are a fair old way from London. How about flying into Bristol - lots of things to do, and it's only just over an hour from London if you want to go for the day. The airport isn't far from the city either.
Ditto Cardiff.

Is it something specific you want to see in London?
You would get better value Up North
Liverpool, great city loads to see and do, it has free and expensive, also has some good beaches
