We have a window of opportunity due to a Uni break to fly from Manchester or East Midlands. Would love somewhere with a little sunshine, cultural, classy.. recommendations for a location or even hotel would be appreciated.

If it’s just for a weekend, you won’t want to go too far afield, and therefore you won’t get guaranteed sunshine or warmth in January. Malaga is probably your best bet and it’s got lots of cultural things to do. When we visited, we went to a flamenco show, the Picasso museum, Alcazaba, ate tapas and visited a large indoor market.

Marrakech would be perfect, stay outside the medina in one of the more western hotels, go into the city if you want. It’s wild but perfectly safe. We stayed at 2ciels which was beautiful

Madeira. Loved it. Lots of small quiet hotels, as well as the very famous Reids. I'd love to go back.

Malaga

These are lovely suggestions, thank you. I’ll have a look a flight availability. Malaga and Seville sound good, as do Madeira and Marrakesh but I may save those as trips to do with my husband.

I guess it’s a bit of a gamble but still probably warmer than the Uk.

Palma always seems to get mild weather and is a beautiful city

Malaga does tick lots of boxes, lovely food, weather likely to be good, some museums, shops, pottering. Lovely hotels. It's a really pretty old nice city. And so easy to get to.
