Crete in October

Sunshineseabeach · 15/01/2023 09:50

We are planning to go to Crete in October and were wondering where could we base ourselves? Which airport should we fly to and which airlines fly there from London.

Any other advice would be appreciated. Places and beaches to visit. I am hoping weather will be good enough fir both beach, culture and historical visits.

Watching with interest. Any suggestions for small-ish, quiet hotels?

Kissedbyfire1 · 15/01/2023 09:59

Are you set on Crete? The weather can be stormy at that time of year. It’s not the best or most beautiful island. There’s plenty of culture with Knossos etc however. I wouldn’t rush back there though.

Weather will be hit and miss in October. Can you go in September?

TomAllenWife · 15/01/2023 10:10

We had a terrible time in Crete in October

Rained 4 days out of 5

Most restaurants shut for the winter

I wouldn't go again that time of year

Schnooze · 15/01/2023 10:12

Friend was disappointed when she went at that time of year.

We went to Crete in an October quite a few years ago, 7 I think. The weather was fabulous. Would never go back though, didn’t like Crete at all.

We had a fabulous time in October 2021! We stayed in Hersonissos, between Heraklion and Malia.

The weather was around 20-23 so not hot but pleasant, and it didn't rain.

We flew to Heraklion with BA from Heathrow.

Sunshineseabeach · 15/01/2023 10:16

Thank you. I thought being so far south the weather would be good mid October. I am glad I asked; we are not set in Crete, perhaps another time of the year may be better.

May have to rethink it and go somewhere else in the October half term. We have always had good weather in October for sight seeing in Italy not beach weather though.

October half term good weather you are looking at the canaries or Turkey. Possibly southern Spain. It's a gamble at that time of year. I went to Dalyan in Turkey and the weather in the daytime was lovely - 24 ish. Night time chilly.

Thank you. Glad to hear; sounds good for sight seeing; perhaps not hot enough for the beach

We did Rhodes in Oct half term and were really disappointed, the weather was rainy, most of the restaurants were shut. I’d definitely go further to the Canaries.

Watching with interest as started similar thread yesterday!

Sunshineseabeach · 15/01/2023 10:53

Thank you

Which of the Canary Islands will people recommend? Or maybe a city break will be better; we have wanted to go to Seville.

We almost always go to Greece in September. Have been to Crete the first week of October and the weather was ok, but not great. We went to Zante late October and it rained most of the time. As other posters have mentioned tourist places tend to close in October, so a lot of restaurants are closed.
If you are set on going to Greece in October, Cyprus would be your best bet, as it’s further South. We spent two weeks in Cyprus in October 2021 and the weather was perfect.

Sunshineseabeach · 15/01/2023 13:24

Thank you; will have to rethink it and choose a different destination.

Cyprus is better weather so would be a better choice. I did an October half-term there and worked out really well. Pool was a bit cold, but warm enough and was cheap. And most importantly as it's a year round destination it doesn't shut down as much as other Greek Islands.

Craghopper1 · 16/01/2023 09:32

Seville is a great choice, weather should still be warm and it's such a fabulous city.
