Atlanta or Miami

Have a wedding in February in Fort Lauderdale and will have a few days to hang out before.

From what I recall, visiting F Lauderdale as a teen, don’t think it’s terribly exciting so wondering where to fly to to hangout before moving on to FL.

Going from London we can fly to Atlanta which has flights to FL or we can fly to Miami International and go by car to FL (not sure if hiring a car yet).

It will be me and Dd, 19, and we’ll probably do a bit of sightseeing, enjoy cultural offerings, food.

Atlanta or Miami?

Unless Atlanta has changed massively in recent years, I'd say Miami every time.

HaroldTheStallion · 13/01/2023 18:17

Definitely, definitely Miami

AttilaTheMeerkat · 13/01/2023 18:18

How many days?

Out of those two I would choose Miami.

If you did fly to Atlanta and transfer from there to Fort Lauderdale same day you must ensure you have enough time to clear both Immigration and customs in Atlanta. You will need a minimum of two and a half hours, preferably three.

I saw the thread title and for a moment thought it was about a new name for a baby girl.

Sorry! As you were.

What she said. I've been to Atlanta on business and it was nice enough, but I don't think I'd holiday there.

ContadoraExplorer · 13/01/2023 18:58

I didn't rate Miami but loved the keys - Key West was much more fun and less expensive than Miami when we were there.

Roselilly36 · 13/01/2023 19:09

Atlanta is definitely not a holiday type place, having been to Atlanta, I would say Miami could be the better option.

RusholmeRuffian · 13/01/2023 21:31

I don't love either but Miami has more to do and has the advantage of being on the coast and much closer to your destination. I would head to the Keys instead.

As you have a few days, why not add in an additional flight (domestic flights are cheap in the US) and go to New Orleans? Beautiful, historic city, wonderful food, lots of character.

BookwormButNoTime · 14/01/2023 08:54

I was in Miami last summer and loved it. One of my favourite US cities. Atlanta was a bit “meh”.

Have you thought about New York instead (if you’ve never been)? Flights go direct from Newark and La Guardia and are very cheap. With the flight sales on at the moment it may well be much cheaper to go this route - Miami flights tend to be a couple of hundred pounds more than NY ones.

BookwormButNoTime · 14/01/2023 08:55

That’s flights from NY to Fort Lauderdale

Maggiethecat · 14/01/2023 17:11

@Ruthietuthie - did consider that as went to NO when expecting Dd - would be nice to go “back” with her. Think Mardi Gras is that week so reckon it will be very busy/expensive then but will have a look.

@BookwormButNoTime - didn’t really think of that as would be flying further north to go back south. But should have a look as sister in NY.

You could also consider Savannah, Georgia. Beautiful historic city, horse-drawn carriages and trees covered in Spanish Moss, amazing food, and on the coast.
Or Charleston, SC.
